Omg, I'm Concerned
 
I've noticed Freya has lil teeth above her upper front teeth. I researched, and it's called retained deciduous teeth? I know how little she is and have heard bad stories about when Yorkies go in for dental... There may be others I'm not seeing...


My sister-in-law, the one who got me Freya basically--said don't worry about it; they'll fall out eventually.



Refer to my last comment to my last post, about her behavior, about taking her to the vet.

From the quick googling I just did they will not just eventually fall out. She should see a vet and have them removed if they are retained deciduous teeth. This is one of the sites that talks about it.

It did not seem to be am immediate threat but if left untreated will cause long term health problems that can be avoided. Spend a few hundred now or a few thousand later

Hi there,

Freya needs to see the vet and have those teeth checked. I imagine the vet will want to take her through a full dental. So, sedate her in order to take the x-rays and then, depending on what the x-rays show, either just clean the teeth, or remove those retained baby teeth.

I'm not a vet, etc., but believe it's always better for her permanent teeth if those baby teeth come out in good fashion.

If you plan to have her spayed, try to arrange that at the same time the dental is performed. That way she only has to be anestesized once for both procedures.

Yorkies are prone to not having all of their baby teeth fall out and they get pulled when a spay or neutering is done. Leaving them in to long WILL mess up the alignment of their teeth which will cause bigger more expensive issues. She really needs to get in for a check up and to get her scheduled for a spay. These are extremely important for the health of the dog and it’s part of being a responsible owner. Anesthesia is very safe especially when the pre surgery blood work is done and all proper protocols are followed. Every heat a female goes into her chances for mammary cancer and pyomentra increase and both could result in death. It’s actually a pretty serious thing.

She is still a puppy so they won’t do a full dental they will just pull the teeth. I have had to do it on all mine when they got fixed. Everyone joked Callie was a shark because she had almost all of her baby teeth not fall out.

I would expect them to indeed take x-rays and proceed on that basis.

No that’s not done on baby teeth they just pull them. There is no need for X-rays.

Same thing with my Millie. She never lost her baby teeth, and my mom had to have them removed by the vet. We caught it early enough that it wan't too expensive, so I agree with the other posters: Spend a little now to avoid spending a LOT later on. Good luck!

Omg, that's what I said. Shark puppy! Lol. I "think" all she has is four extra ones on top front. But I'm not sure. She fights me opening her mouth. Don't worry, I will take care of things ASAP.

Callie had to have almost all of her baby teeth pulled when she was spayed, Joey had to have I think 4 pulled when he was neutered, Penny had two pulled when she was spayed and then Ollie had two pulled. They normally don’t require stitches or anything and it’s very normal for Yorkies. Ollie had a weird puppy tooth that was twice the size as normal which ended up requiring a stitch but that’s not normal. Baby teeth have no roots so it’s not necessary to do X-rays or anything. By the time they are 6 or 7 months if they haven’t fallen out then they aren’t generally going to.

It's quick and easy to have the teeth removed when you take her to be spayed. They definitely need to come out.

Honestly it is different in different areas like I'm near DC so it might be more expensive here then where you live. My vet doesn't charge to pull the baby teeth but other vets might. Most vets can give you a ball park estimate if you call.
