Concerned about weight
 
Been awhile since i posted. Trinket has never eaten well, sometimes she will pick at her food and sometimes she want eat and other times she gobbles her food up. She is 3.5 yrs old and a boney thing. Ive tried many different dog foods but its all the same. My vet says if she seems fine and this is just how she is. Would love some advice on how to bulk her up. Blood panelshave always came back clear as well as fecals

I have had the same problem with my Izzie. Someone on this site suggested I try Royal Canin for Yorkshire Terriers which I did. They told me sometimes picky eaters will eat this. She has started to eat better and has put on a little weight which has helped my anxiety a bunch. Although she has a weird eating habit. If you want a few laughs read my thread under yorkie wired eating habit and all the replies.

I wasn't a big fan either, but I was so desperate for her to eat I would try anything.

I would check with the vet before adding weight to her. If the vet thinks her weight is fine I would let her be.

It’s actually a great food with vet nutritionist on staff, great quality control and food trails. Great company. Sadly they are finding out that all those fly by night companies with the grain free food are actually not good for your dog and cause heart issues.

I've had Gidget on Royal Canin for Yorkies for almost 2 years. Vet tells me to keep doing whatever I'm doing because Gidget is at a perfect weight and very healthy. She's 2 1/2 and going strong!

I know about the grain free causing heart disease and infertility. Im just not a fan of royal canin ingredients.

Vet says since she has always been like this its not a big concern but if she wasnt in full coat she would looked neglected. It bothers me.

You can’t judge by what would be bad ingredients for you. Dogs need different things.

The grain free issue isn't about being just 'grain free' - the products causing issues are those that are grain free and ALSO containing very specific ingredients:

"The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is alerting pet owners and veterinary professionals about reports of canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs eating certain pet foods containing peas, lentils, other legume seeds, or potatoes as main ingredients"

-and-

"Diets in cases reported to the FDA frequently list potatoes or multiple legumes such as peas, lentils, other “pulses” (seeds of legumes), and their protein, starch and fiber derivatives early in the ingredient list, indicating that they are main ingredients."

Let's all try not to confuse people bc the issues are ingredient related, not just due to being simply grain free.

My comment was mostly related to the fly by night companies that put no research or have no vets on staff those are generally the grain free ones that contain those ingredients. I personally though don’t think grains are the end of the world.

Yes - totally agree Taylor :thumbup:!

I too don't think grains are the end of the world, but I do see in my own dogs (2 had allergies) that they tend to do better without added grains for the carb portion. Many, many dogs do just fine with grains.

I think people tend to forget that like us some dogs do better on some food while others do better on other food. You just kinda have to figure it out like you would with a baby or toddler.

I will say since putting my Izzie on Royal Canin for Yorkies she has finally gained weight because she is eating (in the car). I was about to worry myself to death because she wouldn't eat. She has made it up to 3 1/2 pounds.
