Genetic testing
 
Is there any genetic testing that should be done for yorkies? Sorry, if it is a dumb question. I ask because I have collies and the MDR1 genetic test should be done to avoid drug reactions.

Britster recently ran genetic tests on her Jackson. See the thread, "Embark DNA Test."

Only Like four of the test they do are doable for Yorkies. I did some research to see if I wanted to do that for my pups and it just wasn’t worth the money. Maybe Phil will see this thread and post.

Only the three tests mentioned at the start of the Embark thread are relevant to Yorkshire Terriers. The other hundred or so have not been proven to be diagnostic in Yorkies. If I were getting genetic disease testing done, I'd go through a company that only tests for individual conditions, and just get the ones done that are relevant to Yorkies (your vet should have this information). If that proves to be too expensive, Wisdom Panel does a genetic health screening test that is less expensive than Embark and tests for the same conditions: https://shop.wisdompanel.com/product...m-panel-health

Having had collies for many years, I know what tests are needed for them, collie eye and MDR1 for example. I wondered if there were some you all might know for yorkies that I don’t know.

I appreciate your help and I did read the Embark report above.

Genetic testing for diseases in Yorkies is in its infancy. I know that researchers are working on tests for conditions that are common in Yorkies, such as luxating patella and liver shunt, but the genetics of those conditions aren't simple, and progress is slow. The easiest diseases to test for are those caused by a single gene, and unfortunately, those two conditions are genetically complex. Also making things more complex is that genes that cause diseases in one dog breed don't necessarily cause a disease in other dog breeds.

Well said. I just lost my beloved collie, Jamison, to a genetic immune suppression disease not known in collies that causes copper toxicity hepatitis. No one in his line has ever had it, but a liver biopsy revealed it. It is not rare in several other breeds.

Just wanted to know if there was something from which my two yorkies would benefit. One of mine is from a good breeder so she is 100 % Yorkie, not sure about my little man who I got from a rescue. Whatever he is is fine with me, so I don’t really care about that.
