Leaking Yorkie? I did find another thread on this but the information in the thread wasn't terribly helpful and I'm hoping someone has some more advice. About 4 months ago my ~5 year old, spayed yorkie started leaking mostly at night in her kennel. We took her to the doctor and he gave her a RX of Proin (or Phenylpropanolamine). That seemed to help but she often throws it up. So we're left with deciding do we prefer leaking urine or throwup. I'd prefer neither. We took her off the proin after a little while and the leaking seemed to have stopped or gotten much better. We took her to a baby-sitter's house last week while we were on vacation and the baby-sitter said the urine leaking and peeing had gotten much worse...to the point she put a diaper on our yorkie most of the time. When I picked her up the diaper was noticably wet. Is it possible she's peeing and leaking out of some anxiety about going to the baby-sitters because she seemed fine when I dropped her off a week ago. I don't know what to do, other than see if being home for a few days relaxes her to the point she might stop peeing. I didn't notice her peeing at home yesterday but this morning when I got her out of her kennel, she had leaked quite a lot. Any recommendations or suggestions? |
Did your vet check for UTI. |
He didn't physically check for anything. He just took my word for it that she was leaking urine, combined with the fact she'd been spayed he recommended this treatment. I'll mention UTI to him to see what he says. |

Also let him know she is throwing up the medicine because there might be a different one to try if its not a UTI. |

I'd for sure want a urinalysis done asap. And at some point if it continues, an ultrasound would be warranted to see if something structural is wrong here. Also, does she drink a lot of water...? If yes, I'd want to discuss diabetes insipidus and Cushings as things to possibly rule out. And I'd want full blood panels to assess kidney function for sure. |
If your pup uses piddle pads in the house getting a urine speciman is easy - just turn the piddle pad over so the plastic side is up, then the next time they pee just pour it into a sterile container - I ususallu just suck it up with a clean syringe I have around for giving meds. |
I think you need to first have her get an ultrasound and sterile urinalysis done on her first. After they are spayed they can get urinary incontinence which mine has had since she was spayed. Ours is on 1/4 tab of a 25 mg. Proin once a day. We have had some pee problems but we been staying on top of it. We always have ours get her check ups so maybe the best thing is have that test done. I think there are other meds they can give for incontinence. There are other members that are very knowledgeable about this subject. Susan |
