puppy food issues I have a bit of an issue. I know puppy food is what puppy's need to eat but I'm having a hard time getting him to eat it. I mix it with some chicken and he will eat some but not a lot. I can't leave the puppy food out Callie got into it and I was up all night with her because of her IBD. I do leave her prescription hypoallergenic food down and that is what the others eat to. Well he likes it and will eat a little of that during the day. I bought a puppy vitamin do you think that will give him enough of what he needs? |
Here's a wise statement from the Purina dog food company on whether or not puppies can eat adult dog food: https://www.purina.com/dogs/dog-arti...adult-dog-food Basically, if the food says on the bag "for all life stages," then it's okay. Otherwise, the puppy will need a dog food for "growth and reproduction." Keeping my fingers crossed that your hypoallergenic dog food is for all life stages, and you don't have to separate your dogs when you feed them. Quote:

Have you tried Parm Cheese yet...? Or some kind of tasty gravy on top..? Mixing in a bit of wet? |

I checked my small animal clinical nutrition textbook, and a puppy definitely needs to be fed puppy food because it has a higher calorie content and extra calcium and phosphorus for a growing dog. Hopefully you'll be able to get him to eat sufficient quantities of his food. If you can get him past the puppy stage, he should be able to eat the hypoallergenic adult food that your other dogs are eating. If he absolutely won't eat his puppy food, but will eat adult dog food, you'll have to check with a canine nutritionist about supplements to bring the adult food up to par. |
The only thing I can say is that free feeding rarely works for multiple dogs. One eats too much, another not enough, and others eat what they should not eat. It is best to put them on a schedule where they eat at certain times and then the bowls are picked up until the next meal. Free feeding also can cause major tensions and fights. The more pups you have the more likely you will have a problem. |

We have to free feed Bella to keep her from throwing up bile, so I know where you're coming from. It works very well for her, but she's an only child. |
