My yorkie eating problem My yorkie weighs 3 pounds 6 ounces. I have a terrible time trying to get her to eat her dogfood. I have so many opened bags of dogfood it is rediculous. She gets to where she just turns her nose up at food. She is a highly nervous yorkie. Recently she will eat in the car when she won't eat in the house. This all started when we were leaving on a trip and she wouldn't eat so I took her food and she ate in my lap. I have tried to break her of this but I get so worried because she will not eat I give in. When she goes with me driving, she eats in passenger side. Does anybody else have this problem or any suggestions? |

Were I in your shoes, I'd take her to the vet for tests for her nervousness and to rule out stomach problem, etc. My late senior wasn't a nervous dog. When she was just a sweet young thing, Katy preferred chicken breast and wouldn't eat kibble. She was just under five pounds and I think a bit younger than your pup. (Is she about 2 yrs old?) Our vet surveyed my bags of kibble--he picked one (based on the size and makeup of her bite), telling me to give her plenty of water and feed her the selected kibble. As he had predicted, when she got hungry, she ate the kibble and our feeding fiascos ended. |
Yes she is 2 years old. I did take her to vet and the bloodwork came back normal. Everything checked out okay. But she is extremely nervous and will not have anything to do with anyone but me mostly and my husband. The vet prescribed her a low dose of compounded trazadone. I don't like giving her that but I feel like she did need something for anxiety. I am hopeful that if I can get that problem calmed down she will start eating better. So your advice is to put the kibble out and just let it go until she gets so hungry she will start eating. (It is hard and she is so skinny I worry that she will get very sick from not eating). But something has got to give. I told the vet she was nuerotic and she was making me nuerotic. LOL. |

It doesn't sound as though the vet knows she is not eating, or not eating normally. That is a health indicator that I would want her vet to know about...would want his/her input about. More to write, will wait to learn from you whether her vet knows she is not eating normally. I'm sorry you and your little one are going through this. Thank you so much the love care you give to her. Food As your baby is so tiny, I can see how she needs to eat. I know it is not a good idea to present many foods to a picky eater, but have you tried either canned food rather than kibble and or adding some tastier food like chicken breast to get her to start eating? Also some say adding a small amount of powdered Parmesan cheese to the food will tempt reluctant eaters. All this being said, it is good that tests show normal. Hope the anxiety improves. |
Yes the vet knows she is not eating good. She says her weight is holding from prior visit. When she was almost 1 she just about died. She got bordetella from the vaccine by mouth. It was given to her after spaying and according to U.T. - they believe she aspirated it. She had pneumonia and was in hospital there. She wouldn't eat and they had to put her on mirtazapine to get her to eat. I think that whole episode has really affected her. I am hopeful that if her anxiety will calm down that she will eat better. Thanks for your help! |

I have fed her Merrick Lil Plates and other wet food. For a while she ate Merrick good and then she started turning up her nose at it. She does like boiled chicken. Not so much the rice. I may start boiling chicken for her just to get her to eat something. |

If she is that nervous she really needs to be on medicine trust me without it she will be miserable and it might just be a temporary thing. Have you tried hand feeding her? Does she like toys if she does you can buy toys that dispense food or treats and some will eat that way. Have you tried Royal Canin? It can be very inticing to picky eaters. If you likes human food you can look at home cooking at balance.com but you must use their supplement or it won’t be balanced. |
I am going to boil chicken for her today to get her to eating. I have always tried to stay away from feeding from table because I want her to have all the vitamins etc that she needs. She had Royal Canin as a pup. I haven't tried that now that she is older so that is another option. I will look at the website balance.com. Thanks for all the suggestions. |
