Fasting and non fasting blood and urine tests Hi. My dog is due for annual tests and he finds it hard to fast for the tests due to his acidy stomach. What are the important tests that require fasting, and is it possible to get reasonable data from non fasting tests? Thank you |
Mine ever has to fast for regular blood work. Maybe you should call and talk tot he vet or vet staff to see if fasting is necessary. Did they tell you to fast him? |
Fasting Thank you for your prompt and helpful reply Taylor. I ask here as I honestly forgot what the vet said last time. I will call in advance, but for humans they always seem to need fasting. I just thought the vet might have the same mindset and suggest fasting. If so I need to know what tests really need fasting. For most dogs fasting is no big deal, but for mine, he really needs food frequently or he gets sick. Thank you again for your experience and advice. I do hope you and your uncle are feeling better. |

As a human, the only fasting test I've ever had to take was a cholesterol test. I agree with you, fasting sucks :D. |

Fasting Thank you both for your replies. Looks like we may get away with non fasting. And I pray Cushings is not suspected. He seems in good shape and with no abnormal symptoms. I did clean his teeth this morning and his breath certainly improved, but his teeth and gums look good to me. Teeth brushing is not something he or I enjoy. :-(( The last time I remember a fasting test was before his dental last year, and I don’t think I had more tests after that last year. Personally I am ok with fasting tests as I have zero appetite on the mornings and little appetite ever! |
Fasting Just had another comment. When he had his last tests and dental, the vet gave my dog a shot of Pepcid early am that day and that kept the tummy happy. He also seemed to recover from the sedation better. |
The only test I can think of off hand where they must be fasted is bile acid. My pups are checked minimum yearly....every six months for seniors....never are they fasted. |
Tests Thank you re bile acids. I will ask the vet, but I pray he will be ok. He has been eating Hills ID Liw Fat for years and his GI functions and behaviors seem fine, but you never know. I appreciate your input, thanks. |
I wasn't suggesting them. I was just answering your question. :) |
Tests Thank you for your suggestion in answer to my question. I understand you were not saying my dog may need the bile acid tests, sorry if my note suggested I did. But from personal experience I have found that tests often reveal unknown issues! I always fear tests for me and my dog for this reason. As dogs and we age, it is likely that diseases may be revealed that we do not expect. However it is good to catch issues early rather than late. Again thank you for your interest in my question and for your answer. |
