K/D Hill's Science Diet and Poop
 
Hi All,


I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the following. Thumper was put on Prescription food back in December for this Kidneys. I am using Hill's Science Diet K/D. The issue I am finding is that his poop is more soft and at the end can sometimes be liquid. (However more soft than liquid) It does form but becomes mushy once you pick it up.


I thought at first it was due to changing over his diet but it has now been a month with no change. I am wondering if this is normal or for cause of concern.


I have a call into the vet but wanted to see what others thoughts/experience.

I’ve heard of soft poop occurring for dogs when put on a prescription diet like the brand you mentioned. Actually I think it will happen with any food change, unless it’s a change to a raw diet which makes the poops very firm right away. I don’t have any experience with it cause none of my dogs have been put on a prescription diet before. So I don’t know if it’s a cause of concern, just wanted to say that I’ve heard of it happening to others. I don’t know if there’s an expectation that the poop is supposed to firm up with the passage of time, and a month I think is certainly long enough to see it firm up if it’s supposed to on that prescription diet. Hopefully someone with experience with that issue can comment.

I don’t think that’s true about it not happening with raw food. I have come across many dogs with diarrhea and who did terrible on raw. Raw is not always the answer and has huge drawbacks.

I would definitely talk to your vet about it. They just might not do well on that brand and might need to try another brand. Mine have always done well on the Royal Canin prescription foods.

Absolutely for sure I agree. With different dogs there may be different results. But here in the city I live in raw is very popular, and just speaking with lots of people that’s what I continually hear - the poop got really firm very quickly. I know how contentious a raw diet is. There’s only one vet here in town who is ok with a raw diet and all the others are against it. And the Hills Prescription Diet is the brand that most the vets here will put certain dogs on.

I know for me it’s really confusing because it’s as though there’s different philosophies or theories on what type of food is best for our pets. I don’t know what is in the Hills Prescription Diet that makes it so popular amongst veterinarians. Maybe some type of special ingredients or something? I think I’ve seen it at every vet clinic I’ve ever been to throughout all the years Ive had a dog. I might have to do some reading up on it cause I’m kinda getting curious.

Royal Canin and Hills have actual vets on staff and do feeding trails and a lot of these other companies don’t and aren’t trustworthy. I would hope no vet would push a prescription unless needed. I personally have not been to one that did that so I doubt the majority does. My vet never recommended or talked to me about food until my oldest was diagnosed with IBD and she layer out the options and explained them and let me decided. My other two are on the same food because it’s eassier and I don’t have to worry about her getting theirs and getting sick. Honestly raw food would make her extremely ill and could effect my grandmother and my mother who have compromised immune systems.

My first step in figuring this all out would be to find the ingredients and guaranteed analysis of both foods (current food and food just before that) - and compare them. You may find a whole lot of answers right there. Start there. If you want, post the ingreds etc here on YT.

Also, did you start any medications?

Soft stool or stool changes can happen w/ any type of diet change, for sure - whether switching to hard food, soft, raw, non-raw, kibble - or any which way at all.

I do find it's often true, though, that most dogs on raw food have very small, hard, non-smelly poos - which I LOVE, lol. I've been feeding raw for about 10 yrs now, and really love it. But I support all types of diets. Raw is definitely my favorite. For some dogs though, prescription diets can work miracles if they have certain health conditions.

Prescription diets are foods that have been prepared by veterinary nutritionists to treat specific diseases. For instance, prescription food for dogs with kidney problems contains low phosphorus and low sodium to relieve the strain on kidneys. Prescription food for dogs with food allergies contains hydrolyzed proteins that are too small to trigger an allergic reaction. You have to have a vet's prescription to purchase them. Veterinarians don't prescribe these on a whim.

It's possible to create home cooked meals that have the same effect as a prescription diet, but again, it has to been done in close consultation with a veterinary nutritionist, and it has to be prescribed by a veterinarian. www.balanceit.com is a good example of a company that creates tailor-made home-cooked prescription diets in consultation with veterinary nutritionists.

A raw diet that has not been approved by a veterinary nutritionist is dangerous to give to dogs with certain illnesses such as kidney disease. I can't emphasize that enough.

Thanks all. I spoke to the Vet and she suggested adding FlortiFlora for the next week to see if it helps.

After that if no change call and will re-evaluate possible stool sample. She said as long as it is not diarrhea she is not that overly concerned. She said than we may have to weigh the pros and cons of being on a Kidney friendly diet vs. his old food.

He is not only any other medications at the moment. He has very early stages kidney failure but it has not progressed. We got back in March for his 6 month check up to redo blood work and urine sample. The vet suggested the K/D to start to help preserve the kidney function.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I am giving it this week to see how he does.
