Christmas tree water?
 
We just brought home our Christmas tree, the first we've had since we got Max. He loves it, but has bitten off small pieces of branches to eat and has been drinking water out of the stand. We've tried to stop him, and he does seem to have lost interest now that the tree has been here a few days.

I know I've red poinsettias are poisonous to dogs, so we won't be getting any. Will he be ok if he occasionally drinks water out of the stand?

I have heard it is bad for them to drink the water especially if you put other stuff in the water. Chewing on the branches is definitely bad the wood splinters and gets stuck in their gums and can cause an infection.

Do not use tinsel on your tree, if your pup is the type everything has to go in their mouth, tinsel is very dangerous if swallowed. When I had puppies I kept no decorations on lower branches, they would knock them all off, puppies were blocked off from tree area, only allowed in room when I was there to supervise them. Keep no wrapped packages under tree, they will unwrap them lol.

When Callie was younger we found out she likes unwrapping everyone’s presents lol. With Joey being a puppy last year we put a gate around it and that worked great. We thought we were going to have to do it with Penny but she has left it alone. She actually loves staring at the lights. We use fake trees though.

All my puppies, when ever I went out I always bought something home for them. I would toss the bag on the floor and incite them into ripping the bag open to get their surprise, they enjoyed tearing the bag to shreds more then their surprise lol. Now I had a 3 yo and a 9 month old and wrapped gifts under the tree, and off to work I went. When I came home alllllll the gifts were ripped open lol, my fault for teaching them lol. All I could do was laugh at the mess they made. When # 3 and 4 were gotten sure I taught them to rip open their surprise. At Christmas time I blocked off the tree and never a gift was left again under the tree lol.

I have not taught Cody to rip his surprises open, lesson well learned lol.

Pine needles can be VERY hazardous! I just saw someone talking about this the other day on Facebook.

I know you said he seems to have lost interest, but I would not leave him unattended near that tree.

Before Fabian, we had two full-sized tree chock-full of vintage, family-heirloom ornaments. This year (our first with the puppy), I have a four-foot artificial tree on top of an end-table (which looks surprisingly large when viewed from outside.<g>) Non-breakable ornaments. Placed in a section of the house where Fabian has no unsupervised access. Buying mostly gift cards, so they will fit under tree on top of the table. I feel like the Grinch, taking Christmas away from the family, but at least the dog (who's a real chewer) will be safe.

For their birthdays and Christmas I wrap their presents and let them open them. They love it so much but it does have its downsides like them trying to unwrap other peoples stuff lol.

Or attacking grocery shopping bags when you set them on the floor lol.

I wrapped mine in paper so luckily I don’t have that issue but they want to know what is in the bags so they stick their heads in trying to see and sniff lol.

that made my day. And you can't even get mad at them even if you didn't teach them to do it. welll I guess you can kind of get like fake mad, if you can keep from laughing.

I could never get mad at them for their naughtiness, it was my fault, I taught them to rip things open. I had to laugh at the wall to wall paper mess they left me, but didn't laugh so they would see me lol. No more gifts were ever left under tree, no ornaments on lower branches, they would take them off.
I miss those lil rascals so much.
