Hi everyone, so Niko is 1 year and 4 months old now and doing wonderful. He has been on the Acana brand since he was almost 12 months old. I did try to change his flavor once (same brand) to Lamb and Apple and boy was that a mess. Even though I transitioned him - he did not do well on that formula (he threw up and his bowel movements were not normal). With that being said, I got him back on the original formula we started him off with (Free-Run Poultry) and he is doing GREAT! He had his 1 year vet check and the doc was super pleased.
She did say that if he is doing well on this food that I don't ever need to change it, so I get that - but not even to a different flavor within the same brand? Ever? What are your thoughts on that?
Also, for flea and tick prevention, we are using Interceptor Plus (2-8 lbs) and K9 Advantix II for small dog (4-10 lbs)...wanted to know your opinions on these preventatives.
His teeth look amazing but she wants me to start brushing without paste for now so that he can get used to it. Any suggestions on that?
Thanks for your feedback my Yorkie fam! I look forward to your responses! :-):animal-pa | I think every dog is different! I've always given Jackson and our other dogs somewhat of a variety and they have always done well with it. I think variety is the key to life and I do enjoy seeing him be SUPER excited to eat his dinner- maybe moreso than the night before. It's likely a humanistic thing I'm doing but for him, rotating every once in a while keeps him happier IMO.
But some dogs cannot tolerate changes and there's nothing wrong if you found what he likes and does well on to just feed that! I always think it's good to have a backup food though that you know your dog does well on if God forbid you can't purchase a particular flavor, it's sold out, if there is a recall, etc, etc.
I use Nexgard or Simparica for flea/ticks just because I don't like topicals. My pups are in the water every day in the summer too so it's hard to wait the 24-48 hours a lot of the companies say to wait for topical medication.
Starting to brush teeth now is very important! Dental health is so vital, especially to Yorkies, who are prone to issues. My boy had six teeth pulled at his last dental in November and I had stopped brushing etc. it's often genetics, but brushing 100% helps. |
