Puppy on Raw Diet Hello, When can a puppy start on a raw food diet? (Darwins/Stella and Chewys). We are transitioning Harley and Zephyr over to a raw diet and will be getting our third in December! How soon is too soon to start a raw diet? Should we start her off on a kibble diet first then slowly transition to raw? We will be using freeze dried raw and fully raw. Thanks! |
Hi, you can switch your puppy to raw diet right away. Darwins & Stella & Chewy's have complete diets (I feed Primal & occasionally do DIY raw.). For growing puppies, you need to feed 10% of their body weight. But you still need to make sure they're gaining weight steadily. It also depends on their activity level, if very active, feed a little more than the recommended amount. When I 1st started on raw diet, I weighed them once a week. Made sure they were not losing too much too fast or gaining weight. They all needed to shed about a pound or 2. Rapid weight loss is not good for them, so slow & steady. I switched my Riley to raw the last 4 months of his life. I plan on switching my girl as soon as i get her in January. The problem I will have, is she will only get fed just before I leave for work, and as soon as I get home 8 hours later. I’m thinking her first meal in the morning will have to be bigger so she can go back and finish. I also thin it down with homemade milk kefir. |

Otherwise, giving her a bigger meal in the morning should be fine. You can test it out when you're home for the day, like a weekend or something. To make sure she doesn't vomit. Some dogs will eat it again, I know it's so gross but it's natural for them. Homemade kefir is super excellent! |
I would leave the pup on what the breeder has them on for awhile to reduce stress. I personally would not do raw until they are a year old. There are more vitamins and things that puppies need more of then adults. I would feed a good puppy food until about a year and then switch. I have heard of puppies getting sick on raw because their systems were just not ready for it. |

I just did some research on True Dog freeze dried raw. It’s in kibble form and doesn’t need to be hydrated. That makes me feel much better about leaving her that long. She will be 12 weeks when I get her. |
