New puppy with fleas/worms So I just adopted a new puppy from a private home. She weighed in at 2 pounds when I brought her home at 2 months. I have another yorkie who is flea and tick free and who I use advantix on because he ventures outside. I don't take my new baby out for walks since it was advised against for at the vet. My new baby had little fleas and her doctor thought she was too young for meds and didn't prescribe anything but did prescribe a med for the worm she passed. He also said he believed the worms and fleas came from her litter. Well the fleas grew huge and many in number by her 4th month. I saw another doctor at his practice and he prescribed capstar and I asked for revolution as the flea preventative. Well the fleas are back but these are new because they aren't as huge as the other ones were and less in number. We only have wood floors with a big rug and wash her bed and vaccum frequently so not sure why she still has fleas! I went back to the vet and given capstar again for her new weight at 5.5 and advised to have her take bravecto since it works for a longer time but reading the advice on her I see that revolution is more popular. I am worried about bravecto and wonder if I made the right choice and why do these fleas keep coming back? I thought capstar was very effective? |
Welcome to YT. Fleas are very hard to get rid of, you are vacuuming every day which is a must. Empty the contents of the vac outdoors into a plastic bag, tie the bag and put it in your outside trash pail. Buy flea collars, cut them into 3 pieces and stuff them in between the cushions of your sofa, do not put any flea collar pieces into your dogs bedding, you do not want your puppy or other yorkie to eat or lick a flea collar. I had a 10 / 11 year old that had fleas, my vet advised Comfortis, it's a pill form. I don't know with a puppy if Comfortis can be given, you should check with your vet. Keep vacuuming and emptying vac outdoors into a plastic bag, keep washing the bedding and use the flea collars stuffed in between the sofa cushions, make sure the dogs cannot get at the collar pieces you have stuffed in your sofa. Good luck and please keep us posted. |
Capstar is pretty effective, I personally would not do comfortis since she is still young. I have used flea busters for years it is a powder that you put into the carpet, pet beds, in sofa in the back where they like to live. You can lookm it up and order it online, it is messy but it works. I never use flea meds on chester, good luck. I also use flea buster powder in my vacum or cut up flea collar if you dont empty it every time |
