Eating earth worms My two little ones have picked up the habit of eating every worm it can pick up on our walks. We live in a community and can't get around it short of putting them in a car and traveling out of the area. Now I have one that seems to have an upset stomach. His stomach is making sounds and he seems very uncomfortable. Anybody else has these problems. |
Welcome to YT, I have had 4 yorkies that ate just about whatever they could, and my city rescue boy that now lives a life of a country boy will eat anything that moves, but none of them ever ate worms (thank GOD) if your boy appears to not be well I would get him to the vet. I don't know if worms are a danger to his health but one doesn't know what a worm could wiggle through, I would be concerned what was on the worms body and my dog has ingested it. I would be at the vet now. |
I have no had this problem luckily but you might want to teach the command leave it. It can be a very usefully command. |
I've noticed that when my husband used to use YardnGarden bug sprays that we would have an increase in earthworms and snails. Please take your pups to the vet if they are eating these creatures because they may be crawling thru poisonous grasses or foliage. I hope they find relief soon. |
Yep, "leave it" works wonders. I hope he's feeling better and there was no serious side effects from their appetite for those wiggly little creatures. Keep us updated...Winston liked to chase crickets...he learned to leave it pretty quickly thank goodness. |
I don't know how it happened but Buddybear and I use the command "trade" instead of leave it. He knows he gets special treats when I say trade mommy. It works for us. I have no experience with earth worms best of luck. |

:welcome4: :yorkietal So glad you joined our growing family of Yorkie Lovers My two aren't earthworm hunters, so I am only speaking from doing a bit of research. Seems like there are two basic camps: 1) Earthworms are chocked full of protein so eat up 2) Earthworms can be dangerous if they are nabbed from earth that has been treated with chemicals. |

1: Some countries Thrive on these, but I doubt they get them where chemicals have been. . . more of those out in the bush or forest areas. I saw on tv, a high end restaurant were selling these and grasshoppers, beetles, etc. etc. Yucky Poo!!! |
My little boy used to eat the dead dried up ones. After a rain the dead worms would be all over the road. He would gobble them up. Nothing bad happened, but so gross. He finally grew out of this appetizer. Hope yours Stop also. |
