9verreacting or overreacting?! So my yorkie, Bella, has had a rough 6 months. First she had an infected uterus and had to have emergency spay surgery. A few weeks later she had a bad case of pancreatitis. We never had issues with her diet or weight before. She always ate Beneful. After the pancreatitis she was brought home on rice and chicken. We have tried putting her on the food the vet used and her regular dry food, but she just throws it up. So she was kept on the rice and chicken. Now all she wants to do is eat and she is getting FAT. I've read that 1/2 cup of food a day is good, but I swear my husband overfeeds her. Maybe 1 cup to 1 1/2 cups. Any suggestions? Am I overreacting? |
Welcome to YT, your lil baby sure has had a rough start. Many ppl free feed puppies, meaning food is always available for them in their dish, they are so active they will burn off any fat so you don't have to worry about having an over weight baby, she's only 6 months old, that's a wee lil baby. |
I would throw out the Beneful asap. That stuff is linked to dog deaths. I would put her on prescription food and how much the vet recommends. |
:welcome4: :yorkietal So glad you joined our growing family of Yorkie Lovers!! No, you are not over-reacting. I would definitely have a discussion with her vet. She needs more nutrients than she is getting from chicken and rice. There are several brands of food that are diet specific for dogs with problems with pancreatitis. There are even home-cooked alternatives to prescription diets - but they take a tremendous amount of care to keep all of the proportions in line with her nutritional/health needs. One quick question about her throwing up the dry kibble suggested by the vet - is Bella a kibble gobbler? If so, it could be that she is eating too fast and that along with her having stomach issues and changing her food could all be contributing factors. |
If she has had pancreatitis, Beneful isn't the right food to feed. Beneful isn't a good food to begin with. There are prescription foods from Hill's or Royal Canin which my dog is on that will ensure the pancreatitis is under control. |
