Food/Diet Hi, I have a six month old Yorkie and was wondering what type of food is best for him? |
What do you have him on now? You are going to get a lot of opinions. I prefer foods that do food trails, have vet nutritionists on staff and good quality control. I like Royal Canin and Hills. |
You'll get a thousand different opinions on this, LOL. The best food for your Yorkie is the one they do best on, ultimately. :) I've primarily fed Acana to my boy for 7+ years (we've rotated a few times with other brands as well but Acana has been our "staple" food). Always had great luck with it even though I've been annoyed with ingredient changes they've done sometimes, ha! But I usually feed the Acana Singles line and we rotate between some of those flavors. |
I have a picky eater -- Ella's 6 months now. I started her on Royal Canin (the yorkie formula) and she did really well on it, but man her poop stank. Her coat was soooo soft! She stopped eating that then I tried Wellness small breed puppy dry food. She liked it for a couple of days but at the time the kibble was too big for her and she didn't like that.. She also tried blue buffalo life protection. She liked this one but didn't do well on it. Her skin got really dry. Now she's on Ancana small breed puppy food. This kibble is the perfect size! smaller than RC. Also, serving for her size is smaller which is great because she gets full fast and i wanted to transition her to 2 meals from 3. She's doing well on this one! |
There really is no such thing as a "best food"...really. I like Sojos, Primal, Natures Variety, Natures Logic, Solid Gold Wee Bits.... |
:)First things first. :welcome4: :yorkietal So glad you joined our growing family of Yorkie lovers. There are dozens of high quality foods on the market. The best answer I can give is the best food for your baby is the one that works best for him. You may have to do some trial and error. My girls don't tolerate chickpeas (aka garbanzo beans) or a lot of chicken. Sometimes dog food producers change formulas, so I always read the ingredient labels. |
I would like to welcome you to YT, glad that you have joined our community. I don't think I can be of much help to you as my boy is 6 yo, I feed him wellness Core, grain free due to he has allergies. Thankfully he is NOT a picky eater. He loves his food and is doing well on it. |
True! Many men many minds. I prefer as more natural food as possible. |
Dog food Here's a question. Yorkies may develop pancreatitis if the fat level is too high. My Jojo has had a sensitive stomach. My vet said 9 % protein is the best for him. He eats wet hills I'd now. I looking for a good low fat food. I like life's abundance. 16 % fat. My friend feeds Halo. What do you recommend? I don't want to feed just id. Yet the poop is firm. had Jojo to the vet for itching. Bathing with hexaderm shampoo and rubbing fur with coconut oil. |

Two months ago Cali had a pancreatitis attack that scared the beejeezus out of me - several days in the ICU and all that. Now she is doing great and her lab work is just about perfect BUT I am never putting her (and me) through that again. I was always a food fanatic but now have her on Royal Canin ID for meals sprinkled with dehydrated chicken bits (yes bought a dehydrator and grind the dehydrated chicken up pretty fine so she does not pick it out) and use the Hills ID for treats, or sometimes Cheerios when we are doing agility because she can eat those quickly. Never thought, of course, that I would have to use the prescription food, but if her vets say that is what she needs then so be it, and we are doing very well :D |
Dog food Thank you for your info. I must say that hills I'd cleared up some bad diahrrea. Vet said they can stay on it . I looking to see if there's any kibble out there to feed them |
I am only using the kibbles! |

If you want to learn a lot about dog nutrition, here is a link to a site that is run by a veterinary nutritionist. You can find her resume on that website. She has an extensive library in her FAQs...if you don't find the information you need there, you can send her an email and she will respond! Be very careful about some of the websites that rank dog foods....many of them are run by people with no animal nutrition backgrounds at all. There is one in particular who ranks food by ingredients...I won't say that ingredients are not important; but quality control is, in my opinion, the very first thing to look at. There have been SO many recalls and in the past many pets have died because of a lack of quality control. As others have said, the best food is that which works for your pup. www.petdiets.com |
