about meds The Dr. give her some chews to take. But she wont take them no matter what. We have try hiding it in her food lot of the time she find it and take them out or just leave it in the blow. But if she don't see it then she might eat it. But today we just tried it on her golf balls on the red part only and that worked this time. But it might not work next time and I want something else that might work more then one time. We don't all ways have golf balls in the house. I can't hide in ice cream like I do other pills. Since the chew are dark in color and she will see it faster in the ice cream. Thanks for taking the time to read this and answering me back. |
Can you mash them or cut them in smaller pieces to hide? |
we have tried them both. but for some reason she find them. |
We buy soft treats that we are able to put the pill in the middle of. They also make pill pockets. If its a pill that might have a strong taste or smell we make sure to get something that is very strong flavored. We also have given a treat before hand that had no pill and then gave the one with the pill. We also have given her the one with the pill and then followed up with another one so she has no time to pick the pill out. There also is the option of a pill shooter. It sounds bad but its not, it just drops the pill down the back of their throat. You have to make sure it has a rubber tip though or you could damage their throat. I have to do the pill shooter every time Callie has to take tramadol because it tastes so bitter. |

Allie always takes her pills in a small ball of Fat Free Cream Cheese. I have never had a problem with that. |

My suggestion would be to find her most favorite I will do anything for it treat. Then save that treat for hiding this new med. Don't let her watch you prepare the new "med stuffed treat". Like other posters suggested, break up the med into tiny crumbs and hide the them in this new "I"ll do anything or it" treat. Make her work for the treat by doing a trick so that the treat has more value to her. |

One more thing to think about. You have to make this treat seem like it is the best tasting treat on the face of the Earth. Pretend to eat some, get excited about how wonderful it is, get her excited. If you don't believe it will work, you will convey this to her through your body language. It would be sad for both of you to wind up having to force the chew on her for the rest of her life. Is there any alternative forms of the med that might be easier to hide? |
Try wrapping it in cheese, like break it up to smaller pieces if needed and get some sharp cheddar (since it's nicely pungent in flavor and scent) soften it up some and just cover the pill/chew. Mine would usually just swallow it whole or some light chewing. ^^ But you can use mozzarella or a lighter cheese. Some people use peanut butter, as well. |

What medicine is it? |

Is this a prescription med or is it an OTC supplement? If she just won't cooperate, and you can't hide the chew, you might want to ask the vet if there is an alternative med that you could try. |
