How much to feed Hi need some advice. Just adopted a 3 year old yorkie. I have never had a small dog before. Initially, he was having some diarrhea when I brought him home. Went to PetSmart and they recommended feeding him Nutro. My other dog (terrier) eats one meal a day. I was told that Yorkies need to eat multiple meals a day. On the nutro bag it doesn't have portion recommendations for the weight of my dog. The smallest amount it has is 15lbs and it says 15 lbs dogs should get 3/4 cup of food per day. Since he is less than that I have been giving him 1/2 cup per day divided into 2 1/4 cup feedings (at 8am and 5-6pm). He always finishes all is food very quickly. I feel like I am starving him because it doesn't look like much food and then he scavenges for food. I would leave food out for him but my other dog would eat it. Since I think he is hungry I have taken to feeding him 3 times a day. At 8am at 5pm and at 9pm. Another thing is I don't want him to go to the bathroom at night (between 11p-8a)....when should I cut of food for him? Thanks. |
I adopted a 2 year old Yorkiepoo and she eats 1/4 Cup at 6 am and 5 pm. When we leave to go to work, we put kibble in one of those rolling treat dispensers so she doesn't get anxious. I do it again when I come home for lunch at noon. She's gained 2 pounds in 6 months and now weighs 12.4 pounds, which is a good weight on her. She has the run of the kitchen while we're gone...I pick up her water at 6:30 every night, last walk is around 8 or 8:30 and she's good until about 4 am when she wakes my husband up to go out to piddle. We just can't get her past that 4 am wakeup. So, we just live with it. (We also have a fenced in yard she'll run in. Other than that we walk her on a leash at 7am, noon, 5:30. If she hears the neighbor's dogs then she will run around the back yard barking at them (like she's really going to scare several labs and a husky!) and will piddle. We give her a treat every time she does that too. |
Jackson is my bigger boy. He's about 18lbs. He gets 1/2 cup of Acana kibble per day (the food is 420 kcals/cup). I give him 1/4 for breakfast and 1/4 for dinner. He also gets a spoonful or maybe a bit more of wet food mixed in. He also gets a few treats every day usually. He didn't used to like eating breakfast but now lately he seems to for the last few years. So breakfast can be anywhere from 8am-10am depending on the day. Dinner anywhere from 5-7pm. If for any reason we skip breakfast, I just feed the full meal of 1/2 cup all at once for dinner. I would say in general he doesn't really have to go poop after dinner IF he already went before... so let's say he gets let out at 4pm and poops. Then I feed him dinner. He does not usually have to go again until morning. Every once in a while though if he hasn't pooped since morning then eats dinner, he will do his poop anywhere between 6-8pm or so? I never pick up water. He always has access to water. He will usually go out last time anywhere from 9-11pm and he will wake up pretty late if I can sleep in. He's usually happy to sleep until 10am. He hates getting up prior to 8 lol. |
Weight I'm wondering the same thing. My Bails is a little over 3 mths and I free fed him up until recently. His last vet visit he was already at 3 pounds and from the looks of it he maybe a little over that. When I first got him I was told that he would only be no more that 6lbs? Should I be worried that he is already 3lbs? |
