STOMACH PROBLEMS Bloody Stools HELP I have a 3 year old male. Rigby at least once a month he has a bout of stomach problems with fresh bloody stool and mucas. He fasts for 24 hours or more. We havehad him on strickly rice and chicken , white meat no fat or dairy for over a year now and he still has bouts of it. Distended tomach, Pinging Gurgling and bloody fresh and old mucus black stools. I have never owned this bred before (silly me) My vet says only chicken and rice and that useually works. Has anyone ever had this before? IDEAS! Otherwise he is a happy, frisky little fellow that takes on anything from a mouse to an iguana, that dare come in our yard. Does not eat them! We first went from vet to vet NO ONE had an answer after tests and bloodwork! He is fine on the rice and chicken , then outof nowhere it hits. He even knows as he will not go near a cookie or his food HELP PLEASE I am one frustrated and worried Mommy. Joan: |
Any yorkie I had would get this once in a while, diarrhea with blood and mucus, it was a bout of colitis. They got meds, ate chic and rice, in a few days it cleared up. It was not a frequent thing, one yorkie was 13 yo and had it twice in her life, my other gal was 17 yo and had it once in her life. Yours getting this once a month is not a good thing. The next time this happens I would take the stool sample to a different vet for a 2nd opinion. Keeping a dog on chic and rice for long periods of time is not good either, there are no nutrients in chic and rice. |
Poor baby :(! Have you tried Reglan yet, when he has these episodes? Sucralfate? Anything else? |
You really need vet that will listen and get to the problem because something is wrong. They can't really stay on chicken and rice long term because it's not balanced and could cause more issues. |
Hi! I am the OP's sister, and my Springer and I live with her and Rigby. There was a times when he would get all-blood watery stools which would last for two or three days. Fortunately, while he is symptomatic about once a month, the bloody diarrhea is less frequent, although the mucus is still there. We have tried four different vets and, each has a different theory. Not one mentioned colitis or crohns disease, but online research tells me that colitis is a very real possibility. He has been tested extensively, yet there is no definitive diagnosis. Have you any thoughts which would help this little guy at least be more comfortable? (P.S. If we try to add different food to his chicken and rice, he invariably gets sick. But he loves Kirkland Chicken and Rice kibble, so we give him a few pieces every meal and have had no ill effects.):aimeeyork |

I am so very sorry for Rigby's stomach issues. Sometimes finding the solution is very frustrating. We went through a rough patch with Lollie - and after all the blood work and testing it was decided that she had occasional bouts of IBS. Independently I did some trial and error with her food and found that she has a sensitivity to chicken. She can tolerate small amounts of chicken, but not kibble with chicken as a main protein source. More importantly we discovered that her system just can't tolerate chickpeas, aka garbanzo beans. |

Bloody stools Hi Joan: I have 3 yorkies My Rosie has been on Chicken and Rice for a few years and to no avail, once a month like yours she got bloody stools, exactly as you described. New Vet prescribed Royal Canine ( Gastro Intestinal Formula) its by perscription only. I buy it from Chewy.com both dry and Canned I mixed with a little chicken and rice. It has been over a month and no bloody stools. Eventually, I will need to cut out the chicken completely. I did not realize that was too rich for her. Hope this helps Edie |
Have him tested for pancreatitis. |
