Tiny puppy food question
 
So I know this has been asked a lot but what is the best food to feed a very small yorkie pup? We just bought a yorkie puppy who is still less than a pound and he has been on Purina pro plan puppy food which I already know is not good. I am pretty sure I should switch him to a grain free food but I am looking for advice on which brand I should use. I originally was going to use the blue buffalo grain free but the more I read the more bad stuff I heard about the brand, so now I need to find something else. I was looking at a few different brands Natures variety instinct raw boost, wishbone lake grain free duck, and wellness complete health puppy. Does anybody have any experience with any of these brands or any others that may be better? Price is not an issue I just want to give my little guy the best food possible.

I would keep the pup on the same food that he is on for a few months and then change slowly. Grain free is not necessary. I personally am a big fan of Royal Canin because they have vets on staff and use science to make their foods.

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: I agree that it's best to stay on the same food for a few months and then slowly transition to a new food. Royal Canin is good and has a small kibble size. If you have to go grain free (which might not be necessary), we've used Wellness, and our dog loves it. (She also loved Royal Canin.) Do NOT use Blue Buffalo. We've had bad personal experiences with their quality control.

I would keep the pup on the Purina for at least the first several weeks.

Then if you want to change, I'd recommend Natures Logic Venison, Solid Gold Wee Bits, Natures Variety, Wellness Core.

I feed raw and LOVE IT for my kiddos - for that I recommend SoJos, Primal, Natures Variety, Better In The Raw, Stellas...

Yes keep the puppy on the same food the breeder had him on for several weeks, this wee little baby is going through many changes now. He has been taken away from his momma, litter mates, humans that he knew. Now he is in a new home, new humans, new smells, sounds, many adjusts, what you do not want to do is to upset his stomach with changing his food. After several weeks he will have settled in, have gotten use to his new human family, smells, sounds, etc. then you can slowly transition him to a new food. Stay away from Blue Buffalo there have been many recalls. A grain free food is not necessary for a puppy.

We used the Royal Canin puppy and then adult for Bailey. Bella has to have special food as a result of her liver shunt.

Minnie Pearl is just over 2 lbs at 7 months tomorrow, and she eats Royal Canin Extra Small Puppy! I am very happy with this food and she's been healthy as a horse on it :)

This is great to hear. We sadly lost our previous Yorkie (3lb) a couple of months ago at 7yrs old :( and just picked up our new little guy yesterday and the breeder has all her puppies on Royal Canin so we will continue on the XSmall Puppy food! :cool:
