Paw Licking/ Biting? I find my Yorkie is licking his paws fairly often, I catch him a few times a day and his paw will be wet from licking. A vet visit (regular check up/ examination), and our vet concluded he is very health and nothing is wrong. He is on Natural Balance - Fish + Potato formula. It's a limited ingredient dog food. He was having allergies with chicken formulas. (Although he may be switching to raw in a bit, and I'll see if that might help.) And strangely dogs who exhibit chicken allergies to Kibble-Dog Food, usually do NOT with raw chicken.... I find that rather strange. (real descriptive ey lol) But does anyone have any suggestions as to why all the licking? |
Generally it's an allergy response. Your vet is certain it's not allergies? There is also a thing a dog we had growing up had and that was he did nervous licking of his paws. |
On a chicken-kibble diet he was having some darkening of his skin, which we concluded to be allergies. Once we cut the chicken he has since been fine, clear skin. I do not believe it to be stress related, as there is no catalyst for stress. We can be lounging on the sofa, and he will be sitting by our feet resting, and just randomly decide he wants to lick his paw. We do not have to say anything to him, we do not have to be looking at him. It's not even that excess, but he does it from time to time, maybe I'm just thinking it's something when it's not? He looks exactly like the pup in the middle of your display pic hehe <3. |
Well food allergies are actually rare what is more common is environmental allergies which is really common. Does he have any red or irritated skin on his paws? That's my only boy my little Joey and he is a cuddle bug lol. Actually my first boy dog and I was pleasantly surprised. He had been passed around from several homes at just 9 weeks old and was unwanted and something about him just called to me so he is now in his forever home. He is just a little over a year old. |
Does his paws smell like fritos corn chips @ all? Was a skin scraping done? If yes to corn chips smell, it could be yeast....it's very itchy & smelly. Yeast thrives in moist places, so the constant licking, dampness can exacerbate it. Also, high carb starchy diet are fuel for yeast. So all grains, potatoes (including sweet potatoes) must be eliminated. There are also higher than normal carb veggies & fruits, like carrots that needs to be eliminated. Linking a great article/ video just in case: Chronically Itchy or Smelly Dog? It Could Be Yeast Infections If it doesn't smell like corn chips, then it could be his nails. Might need trimming. If it gets too long, it bothers them when they walk. If his nails are trimmed, then it could be just boredom or OCD, just like human baby thumb sucking. My vet said so! LOL |
Dogs, especially yorkies, are very prone these days to enviro allergies (dust, pollens, grasses, trees, whatever...). The cardinal sign is paw licking and chewing. I would bet it's allergies - and not to food. More about allergies here: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html I have years of experience with allergies in 2 of my dogs - and the meds that work best are Apoquel and Atopica. |
