Vetmedin/pimobendan Hi, I have a 9 year old yorkie. He has a grade 3 heart murmur and his heart is mild/moderate enlarged. He is asymptotic, no coughing or panting, or any accumulated fluids. The cardiologist wants him to start pimobendan. The dosage that he prescribed is much higher than the company recommends on their website. He prescribed 1.25 tablet twice a day. According to the recommended dosage on the company chart, that is the dosage for an 11 pound dog. Rico weighs 7.4 pounds. I was just wondering if anybody gives their dog this medicine and at what dosage and how much does your dog weigh? Also, any side effects? Thanks so much! __________________ Thank you flippedstars for my amazing siggy! If a vet recommends a higher dosage, there is usually a very good clinical reason. Did you ask why...? |
Yes of course. He just said the dosage chart was old. |
My Lucy weighs 7.2 lbs and last year she was diagnosed with an enlarged heart (around one and a half times the size it should be). At first she was only on Furozenol but her coughing and breathing didn't get better. The vet then put her on 1.25 Vetmedin twice a day. She's been taking them for around 8 months now. Her coughing decreased and her breathing improved, she doesn't have any side effects. She also takes 15g Furozenol (Diuretic) twice a day. She sleeps comfortably all through the night, however, recently she's started to cough again so she'll be off to the vet for a checkup, I usually take her every 3 months. |
I went this week to get a second opinion from a highly regarded cardiologist and he said my dog does not require any meds at this time. He said it would have been detrimental to his health to give him the meds especially at that high dose! Glad I did not follow the advice of Dr. Phillip Fox in NYC. I would not recommend this vet. |

Wow.. no need to be hostile. I am not dragging his name through the mud, as you say. I stated my opinion. Since when is that a crime? Dr. Fox is on the board for that particular medicine. He pushes it on any patient that has a heart murmur. He said that there is no need to do an echocardiogram. In my opinion I find this to be irresponsible at the least. This medicine is known to have bad effects especially on dogs who do not need it, even sudden death, has been reported. You can google it. |

I think the problem revolves around ignorant people. Reply again if you want, I'm not going to waste my time with someone like you. |
I think that you must not realize how many people think they can go on google and then diagnose and fix their dogs. Its one if the biggest issues in vet medicine. Just so you know I'm far from ignorant actually this spring I became a certified vet assistant after passing my classes. I also shadowed for my vet and got learn some of the big issues. Just because someone disagrees with you doesn't make them ignorant. |
