Travel In one month my family is moving from Pennsylvania to Bangkok, Thailand. We plan to take our 8 year old Yorkie, Scottie. The policy of the airline is that he must go in the cargo hold. The cargo hold is temperature controlled. We purchased the recommended crate which is fairly large (considering his size). My problem is that the time from take off to landing in Bangkok is 18 hours. So likely he will be in his crate for 20 hours. Tell me, is that just cruel? Am I making a mistake? The other option is to go through the process of making him an emotional support dog. But isn't that dishonest? What would you do? Personally, I would love to leave him here in the US, but he is a best friend to my children and they are so sad to move. I thought to not bring him would be heart breaking for them. Any advice? Experience? HELP!!!! |
Honestly...(and ironically, it turns out)...if I had to do something a bit dishonest to keep my dog safe, I'd do it. Some will disagree with me. But "right or wrong" isn't defined by an airline for me, personally. |
Be your dog's emotional support person! I would go through the process of getting the emotional support certification as long as it doesn't so something permanently weird on your medical records - like you have to be diagnosed as unstable to warrant an emotional support dog. A quick look up and I saw this: "An emotional support animal (ESA) is a pet that provides companionship to a person who suffers from symptoms of a mental or emotional disability." That could backfire. |
20 hours in a crate!!!!! Definitely go for the emotional support dog. It's NOT dishonest, it's HUMANE for the dog. To think of taking an 8 yo dogs family away from him is inhumane, you are his family, emotional support dog PLEASE. |
Emotional Support Thanks! I've made an appointment with my daughter to see her pediatrician to see if we can get a note. I spoke to my daughter about it...told her that I know she's afraid to fly and anxious about the move and that she would be so worried about Scottie if he wasn't with us in the cabin. So we're going to ask the doctor for a note to see if Scottie could come with us. She seemed to genuinely feel relief and was happy. So...maybe I planted this seed in her head, but maybe it's not as dishonest as I thought. We'll see. Appointment is tomorrow. Thanks! |
I would do anything to keep my baby with me. Do not put Scottie in cargo. Any fur baby is an emotional support. No way would I think that this is dishonest. Safe travels. |

I would not put him in cargo and try everything you can to not do that. It's really not super climate controlled and it is just not safe for any dog. |

OK I will weigh in on this. First- I would never put my pup in cargo and certainly not for that long. Second- encouraging a child's unreasonable anxiety is not in the best interest if the child. Therapy may be called for in that area. Third - I write prescriptions for ESA AND Service Dogs quite frequently. And, if is meant no cargo i would do whatever to keep them out of cargo! And that is a looong trip. Understand that your dog must have the temperament to be well behaved on the plane. The flight crew has the right to remove the dog if is is distributive in their eyes. Also, understand, once you leave American terrritory the US ADA laws no longer apply! If you will PM me with your email, address I will send you a copy of the prescription I write so folks can keep the pets with them on the plane. |
