Picky Eater does not gain weight My Yorkie is very tiny, only weighs 2 pounds and 3 ounces. She has weighed as much as 2 lbs 7 or 8 ounces but lately she is down to 2.3 lbs. We are giving her the best food we can. It is soft food because she has lost lots of teeth even though she is only 4 years old. We do clean her teeth every day and the vet sees her every year. He says she is in good health but she is very skinny. We worry that she is not gaining any weight even though she eats the recommended portion 2.5 to 3 ounces of wet food daily. She is not consistent with a schedule for eating even though I have tried. I give her half in the am and usually she ends up eating it late afternoon. I immediately serve her the other half and sometimes she eats at night after we go to sleep. Should we be concerned? Otherwise she is in good health. When she doesn't eat during the day, we put a drop of Nutrical in her mouth so she doesn't get hypoglycemic. This usually opens her appetite and then she eats all her food. We worry all the time. |
If your vet says she's not skinny she should be ok. Adult dogs even tiny ones should not get hypoglycemia unless something is wrong. Have you tried sprinkling a bit of cheese or boiled chicken on her food. |

Have her liver numbers been tested recently...? If not, I'd test them. If just skinny, I'd be giving high-caloric treats like bits of peanut butter and cheese, and nutrical. I'd sprinkle Parmesan cheese and/or low-salt broth on her food. And try feeding things OTHER than just kibble - try wet food, raw food (Primal, Natures Variety, SoJos), and cooked food mixes (Honest Kitchen, SoJos etc). |

Parasites? Has your vet checked your pup for parasites? In other animals, parasites can cause weight loss and loss of appetite. |

I know this may be of little help but Sophie has appetite issues and we've never been able to diagnose the reason. Blood tests, urine tests, x-rays and an ultrasound. She also has bad teeth but due to some current issues, our vet can't put her under. We have found that her favourite way to eat is if we take dry food, grind it into a power and add water to make what we refer to as "her gruel" and then mix in a little canned food or sprinkle with liver. We bought a coffee grinder just for her and do this every morning and she has been doing well and even gained some weight. Sometimes we will add cooked rice as well to it, but she usually doesn't need it because it can constipate her. Hopefully you are able to figure out something for your little one, I'm always worried about Sophie's appetite. |
Too late to edit but I also thought of two other things. Have you checked her mouth for ulcers? Sophie had an ulcer under her tongue awhile ago and even though she was hungry she would only eat a few bites and then wouldn't touch the food again. Or is she really active? My dad's previous dog was so active that he required more food than the recommended amount because he was losing weight because they were feeding based on the bag but he was a lab that went for almost daily hikes and was always swimming/playing fetch. Im not sure of this is a possibility but thought I'd throw it out there. Sophie also prefers her food warmed up and not cold. Picky little creatures lol |

Our breeder and vet recommended we free-feed our pup. We put her food out in the morning and she eats when and if she wants. It has worked out well. So, I wouldn't worry if she eats variable amounts and at her own pace. Our breeder recently recommended we make bone broth with either a chicken or turkey carcass. You can cook it in the crockpot for 48 to 72 hours. I am going to freeze daily portions in ice cube trays and pour one over her food each day. We feed our pup fresh fruits and veggies from an approved yorkie list (there are somethings like grapes, raisins, garlic that yorkies should not have) but the breeder suggested making a daily "salad" with a variety that we have available to give her a boost in vitamins and minerals. Maybe some of these things would help. |

My sick 8 year old My Nine pound yorkie has been vomiting and has diarrhea.This is the second day. I gave her a greenie for the first time. Should I rush her to the vet or wait until tomorrow. She has licked an ice cube but is very listless. |
