Underbite Recently purchased a 10 week old Yorkie off an ad in the newspaper. She's gorgeous and healthy (pet vet). However, I noticed she has an underbite. She's too young so her canines are barely growing in yet but I can tell that once they do come in, they're going to get in the way of her top canines. My questions are: Anyone have a Yorkie puppy with an underbite that grew out of it as he/she got older? What treatment should i begin so that she doesn't have problems later on? |

That said, there are veterinary dentists that can put in braces, but I'm sure they will tell you it's too early to tell right now. |
You could always do a consult with a vet dentist. I think its a genetic issue so I would watch out for any other ones to pop up because I'm guessing the breeder didn't care much. |
If there is an underbite now, there probably will still have one with adult teeth. My little one had this all thou it didn't cause any problems. He did have weird teeth and we spent thousands of dollars to correct them. I would address while he is young. |
What treatment did you do to correct them? How much did it cost approximately? Does insurance cover? |

So he went through the surgery, which took a long time. With his bottom teeth gone the doctor built up his bottom bone with some kind of bone building stuff. Sealed the gums to the bone so no bacteria would inter his blood stream. In a few months of weekly vet visits his lower canine was coming in. Prayer answered. Lost track of the money, but I know it was 2 or 3 thousand. And no, insurance, if we had any, would not apply because an underbite is genetic. My baby did just fine with less teeth till his passing @ 7 years. Miss him terribly. |
Had a poodle puppy I had checked very carefully for scissors bite, checked mom and dad, and within days of getting her home, she developed a gross-looking undershot jaw and I was sick, sick, sick. To me, there is nothing so unattractive in a fancy poodle with clean-shaven muzzle as a glaring undershot jaw. Ugh! I fretted and worried, talked to everybody, breeder would take her back - already bonded - not an option, thank you, but said be patient, she was carefully bred for total conformation in all points and no underbite had been in the line; and the vet said just wait and see, etc., yadayadayada, but I was sick, certain my beautiful, perfect poodle(she had wonderful poodle conformation otherwise) was spoiled for good with a major fault most poodle owners really detest in the breed! I spent a miserable few weeks, checking her bite constantly. I took photos to track her progression or any changes, for what reason I can't say. I was obsessed with that gorgeous dog's bad bite. Thank goodness, her permanent teeth grew in a normal scissors bite and she was always beautiful and elegant, striking in appearance. But that poor girl was SO sick of me always fiddling with her mouth and, thankfully, her breeding held true. |
