Yorkie Puppy Gagging I have a 4-month, 1 and a half-pound yorkie. He is "honking" or "hacking" 4-8 times an episode mainly when lying down taking a nap, followed by a gag. He has anywhere from 5-10 spells a day. My Vet tells me its allergies. I have read a lot about a collapsing trachea. He tells me that if this were taking place he would be coughing constantly and struggling to breathe. He is not doing this. He is fine after the episode takes place. Honk, honk, honk, honk, and a big gag or retch. Break, start again. Then a good bit of time goes by before it happens again. I am questioning my Vet because everything I read on reverse sneezing vs. a collapsing trachea states that a gag or a retch follows collapsing trachea symptoms, as this is what is happening. I’m not so sure he is coughing honestly, it almost seems like dry heaves and gag! No X-rays have been taken. This is my baby and I am concerned!! We go back tothe Vet Monday for his last set of shots for a year. If he won't take X-rays again I will go to another Doctor. Thank you for your time. Leslie Precht |
kennel cough...... go to see a vet... they might prescribe antibiotics for him and maybe a cough suppresant..... my baby had ti, but i just let it run its course because he didnt have any secondary infections (green coming out of nose, REALLY goopy eyes, ect.... ) |
I don't want to scare you but it sounds an awful lot like kennel cough! If I remember the way it was explained to me years ago, it is kind of like an upper respiratory infection humans get. It is very contagious and needed antibiotics to kick it. If your vet doesn't take your concerns about your baby as seriously as you do you need to find another who will! |
yes it is very contagious and it can be serious...... BUT (there is always a but) MOST cases of kennel cough go away on their own, it is only if the puppy has a secondary infection (neumonia) that the puppy needs antibiotics...... i only used children cough and cold by robitussin.... and it cleared up in about 3 weeks.... i have read articles that suggest if you use antibiotics when you dont necessarily need to it can take longer for the kennel cough to go away |
Thank you for your imput! Makes me feel a little better that i'm not getting reports of a collapsed trachea! I got him in January on a Friday. Took him to the Vet the following monday for shots and noticed he kept sneezing and scratching his ears. He had an ear infection and took a round of antibiotics for that. It cleared up. He has no discolored mucus now although I am giving him eyedrops for runny eyes. I have given him a triaminic cough and runny nose with no relief that I can tell. I will be glad to get this baby in tip top shape! Glad I rescued him when I did! Thank you all!! |
lwp... My pup is doing the same thing. He only does it after naps and when waking up in the morning. He's been on 3 rounds of antibiotics. My vet told me she thinks it's post nasal drip caused by allergies. |
Thank you Ringo! It wakes him up from his naps at times! Rarely does it when playing! My vet said allergies too. Just doesn't seem fair that he has to go through this without relief! |
Gracie does the exact same thing, Leslie. My vet says it's kennel cough, and she's been fighting it for 2 months now and has been on three rounds of antibiotics. It's getting better (finally) and she's mostly only doing it in the morning when she wakes up. Once in awhile she does it during the day but it's a quick hack/honk/gag and she's done! My vet checked her trachea and said that if you push lightly on it and she does it, that's indicative of a collapsing trachea, but she doesn't do it then. So if it doesn't go away after another month, I'm going to look into testing her for allergies or at least trying some meds for it. |
Great information, Thank you! I just lightly pressed on his neck and no cough. I also tried rubbing it and no cough also as I read on a collapsed trachea site. This has been going on since his last shots three weeks ago monday. Can't wait to let my Vet know this Monday what everyone else is saying! Gives me hope and helps me stop worrying so much! Riley and I thank you all!! |
Wanted to see if pic would show on profile now!! |

Since this topic is brought up, can someone answer this for me. Beau will sometimes (not often, not every day, but occassionally) especially after drinking water do that sneezing kind of thing, gag once, then he's cool. Is this reversed sneezing, is this kennel cough, or his trachea? The sound he makes before the gag is more like a sneeze, not a honking sound or anything. I think it's reversed sneezing, what do you guys think. |
