So, the most important thing to address here first is: what are you feeding...? Bc there is very likely undigested food ingredients passing thru her - leaving food intact when it comes out the other end. That's one reason they're attracted to eating poo in the first place - there is FOOD in it ! So first and foremost - assess food situation. Get her on grain free, and higher protein. If I could recommend a kibble, it'd be Natures Logic Venison. If she is already on the best possible food for poop-eating, then you move to using Solid Gold's SEP (Stop Eating Poop) or similar. So, whatcha feeding? |
The reason pineapple works (for some dogs) is that it has bromelain, an enzyme in pineapple that digests protein....a good digestive enzyme & probiotic might help if your dog(s) doesn't like pineapple. https://pet-health.knoji.com/benefit...ine-illnesses/ Ann is right, there's something in the food that's not digesting thoroughly & it still smells like food to them. |

I have this feeling, it might be just a stinky bad habit? It's kind of 'funny'. My previous dog used to eat her poop (but eventually grew out of it). Scottie would eat other dogs' poop at the park (and I assume everyone feeds their dogs different kibble). And now Casie eats her own poop. It's like all my dogs have a strange affinity for poop. I could tell some really gross stories about my sweet, beautiful, loving little Dominique's poop eating habits but I will spare you all. I am feeding Royal Canin kibble. My hubby sometimes gives chicken jerky snacks and if out of her x-pen she will eat Pure Balance which is what my larger dogs eat. But it doesn't matter to her what anyone else eats she will eat their poop and hers too! She and 2 of my other girls use potty pads and I catch her in the act all the time. I am on poop patrol constantly!! I have canned pineapple and will try it on all 3 of them. I just shake my head and think how can such a cute little stinker be so nasty?? She loves to give kisses and lots of them!! I can say the word kiss and it's on!! I want her kisses but yuck! I also wonder how unhealthy this habit could be?? I was hoping by now that she would have grown out of it! |
I would suggest frozen pineapple not canned |
Thank you MaxDog I wasn't sure... |
I give my Ruger fresh pineapple, he loves it, but thank goodness he's never ate his poop. |

That's interesting then. I already give them the Nature's Farmacy Probiotic Max, which has digestive enzymes (I think)? |
I used pineapple and it took about five months but it worked. Susan |
My dogs used to eat their poop and the cats poop too. I switched their food to Merrick for small breeds. After about a week they have never done it again. Can't swear it will work for anyone else but it worked for me. |

I wonder how changing their food stopped them from eating the cat's poop? 10 years ago I did not envision myself sitting around chatting about eating poop! |

My guess is that they were eating/craving that poop bc their bodies were missing/low on something. Once they started Merrick, they stopped craving. Sort of like how Pica works. Save |
Just an update on Casie... Ever since I found out that it's the bromelain in pineapple that is the digestive enzyme and realized that bromelain is in the Nature's Farmacy Probiotic Max supplement that I give them, I started to make sure I fed the probiotic regularly (before, I only did it when I remembered). I continued to take Casie out for potty walks, as Scottie is outdoor potty trained. Each time she pooped outside, I consistently praised her. She LOVES to hear "good girrrrrl Casie!!". She always gives me eye contact whenever she potties outdoors. It's the cutest thing. :D It's been a few months, and I don't want to jinx anything, but she's pooped indoors a few times. And of the few times, she's only eaten her poop twice (once was at my mom's house though when we went away on a weekend - so I won't count that). I was surprised that she started to not eat the poop - maybe because of the bromelain? Anyway, I'm SUPER happy about her tiny progress. She's 1 year and 10 months now. I'm thinking maybe she's a slow learner when it comes to holding her poop? I think she's very slowly getting it and likes pooping outside more. Or maybe because she started hating eating it? Who knows... *happy dance* |
<Q > lol, to us it is, but not to dogs, they don't know it's wrong just that it's tasty lol. Cody knows it's wrong but he'll try anyway, sometimes he'll give it a dirty look like the poop is a trouble maker and gets him scolded lol. <Q> Hilarious !! Bad poo. LOL |
