Bad advice = Hypoglycemia Hi there Just wanted to share my bad experience today. I followed some bad advice from a pet store clerk and that of many opinions from the Internet For the past few months I've been feeding my less than a year pup all life stages Acana dry food. I chose this because I was told a dog could develop allergies if eating the same thing and Acana offered a variety of dry food. For reasons I can't explain I was also told he didnt need the puppy formula. As a result my Nemo became Hypoglycemic and lost some weight (pups should gain not lose). I could not tell anything was wrong because his behavior was fine and his poops didn't indicate anything. I've since switched to Royal Canin and I'm working with my vet and breeder to be sure there are no other health issues. ...though I'm 100% sure it's the diet. I'm just putting this out there as a cautionary tale of whom to listen to. I know there is debate about food but I'm now weary of the Holistic approach /brand for Yorkies. Ì mean evolutionary speaking. .they ate Rats! |
The store clerk did not give you bad advice - what they said is actually fine/true. "All Life Stages" foods are okay for pups and adults - that's what all life stages means. And it's true, eating the same food over and over can potentiate any vulnerabilities toward allergies. This is why it IS a good idea to rotate protein and carb sources -- BUT, always save ("save" = don't feed!) a few novel proteins in case of allergies later in life. If you're trying to avoid allergies, one of the worst foods to put your kiddo on is Royal Canin. Corn is a horrible allergen for canines - and I personally won't feed my dogs anything w/ corn. I firmly believe in grain-free kibbles; also believe in higher-protein foods/kibbles rather than higher-carb. As for why your pup lost weight, it's likely that he needed larger portions. And Acana would not cause the weight loss. Acana is a very nice food, btw. Hypoglycemia doesn't cause weight loss. Hypoglycemia is due to low blood sugar. If looking for something different than Royal Canin - I recommend Natures Logic, Natures Variety Raw Boost Instinct, Solid Gold Wee Bit (tiny kibbles are nice), Wellness Core. I feed raw and have for about 8 years - LOVE it for my kiddos. I feed Better In The Raw or Primal. |
Thanks for the input. I agree with the corn in Royal Canin. This is just an interm solution until the breeder's vet does the diagnostics. I think there is something to be said about the level of protein in Acana. While it's a fantastic product and I really like the variety ...maybe for my pups genetic makeup it's not suitable. In general the vet said the protein level should be lower than 28%. It could be my dogs liver function which is now being looked at by ultrasound as I type. As to how much I feed..he's almost at a cup when factoring in a treat or 2. I followed the guide and was sure to feed 3 times a day. |

I love Royal Canin think it's an awesome food. Hope you figure out what the issues is. |
Turns out Nemo is not good with high protein so I've been given a bag of royal Canin vegetarian as well as a list of other similar products. Not sure what to make of this other than I'm grateful he doesn't have a shunt. Everything I've learned about food has gone out the window. |

Based on testing his liver function twice and an ultrasound. Despite what many say I don't think it's a last resort option let alone a bad one...though I'm not against meat. There is some research that supports this. But I'll watching closely and I'm not oppose to meat "treats" |

He had high bile acid before and after fasting, which lead them to think a possible shunt. Come to think of it he became Hypoglycemic 2 hours after I fed him before I brought him. How do you know it's a last resort measure? |

So, he's not "good with high protein" (that was the vet's prognosis...?!) - so then why not just feed a moderate protein kibble...? You're feeding 17% protein w/ the vegetarian diet - no different than many kibbles. What is being achieved with potato protein vs meat protein? I don't get the logic here, nor the clinical evidence of what the vet has chosen. |
I'm not saying it's the best or otherwuse. Do you know a brand with that protein? ...I am keeping an open mind. Came here for 2nd 3rd opinions and help I got them ...thank you. |
Just reading over this thread and feel like my last post came off very abrupt - my apologies if it did :)! I didn't mean it to be feel that way. Sometimes at 2:14am when I can't sleep ...I shouldn't be interacting with anyone :D. Dang insomnia. What I should've added is all of this too: Please keep us posted on this kiddo bc it's very interesting and we may learn something from it. If the RC Veg ends up working, then wonderful - you've gotten him back on track, and that's what counts :). Many of us here have been thru health issues w/ these littles and have been in your shoes - so just have confidence that we care, and that you *will* get him to a better place. You're a great Momma and it shows. :) Save |
Hi everyone Nemo is doing well. Went for a follow up and he's gained weight. Seems his pescribed veggie kibble is working. I think what I've learned from this is I personally won't feed all life stages to a puppy and I will try and stick with lower protein for this guy. He's unique I guess:) Once again thanks for all your input |
