Drinking water I have an 11 week old Morkie that I have had for a week. She doesn't seem to drink much water. She weighs 1 1/2 pounds. She is very active, eats good, and poops good. She just does not seem to be comfortable lapping out of a bowl. Has anyone else had this issue and do you have any ideas to get her to drink more water. I noticed her urination has decreased. Thanks |
I bet she’s drinking okay (sometimes the only way I know my girls are actually drinking is that they come up to me with dripping beards haha). You could try a different location for the bowl, a different type of bowl or bottled/filtered water rather than tap. My girls also like when the water is fresh & cold. So, I change it twice a day. I’d start with seeing what type of bowl/water the breeder was giving her, then experiment until you feel comfortable that she’s drinking enough. |
I have one of those dog water fountain and only use bottled water plus I have a small bowl next to it for the puppy. I emailed the breeder today to see how she was used to drinking water but have not heard back from her. Thanks for the advice! I am probably overreacting. |
What kind of food is she eating? I find that after feeding kibble, my two are thirsty within the next 30 minutes. At 1.5 lbs, the little amount of water she does drink may be sufficient. They're so tiny, they won't be finishing a whole bowl of water throughout a day. I think if her poop is good (kind of like play-dough and doesn't stick to the ground), she's probably drinking enough water. If she was dehydrated her poop would look more shriveled and dried up. Also, if she's dehydrated, her gums will dry and tacky rather than moist and shiny (like ours). If you feel she's not drinking at all, maybe try different bowls as Monroe-Rylee suggested. And make sure to clean the bowl and change the water on a daily basis. And give her filtered water. It helps with preventing tear stains. |
It could be the brand of water also. My guy will not drink tap water, I went through 7 brands of water before "the prince" found one that he likes, Poland Springs. |
I am feeding her Fresh Pet for Puppies mashed up with her Iams kibble that I have ground up into a powder. I do this because she doesn't eat her dry kibble very much. |
Oh this is very likely one of the reasons for drinking less water. Wet dog food has water content in it, so she won't be drinking as much. Did you notice that she drank less after you started changing the way you feed her? Sometimes we have to play detective to know what's going on with our kiddos. :D |

I noticed she drank less water after I started feeding her the Fresh Pet. She wasn't eating the dogfood the breeder told me to feed her (Ceasar Puppy). I transitioned her over to the Fresh Pet Puppy and she eats better now. That makes sense. Thank you for the advice!! |
