Switching from puppy food to adult food I have a 11 month old yorkie that I started to switch from royal canin puppy food to royal canin adult food - he refuses to eat it and now will not eat the old food - any suggestions on what to switch him to so he will eat? |
Dogs generally won't starve themselves so I would give it a few days. Are you using the yorkie specific food? |
Yes I am using Yorkie Royal Canin - he just won't eat it at all!! Crazy dogs - I even soaked it in some chicken broth and he just spits it out!! |
I’ve never had more issues getting a dog to eat until getting a Yorkie. With Monroe, I tried so many different types of dry food and she finally liked Natural Balance. She now eats low-fat Royal Canine for her tummy. But, the process is still: soak the dry food in hot water for about 2 minutes, warm a bit of boiled chicken breast, then drain the water and mix the moistened dry with the chicken using my hand (I started this after seeing Cesar Millan recommend it) for some reason she does seem to like my scent on the food rather than simply stirring with a spoon. A woman at her daycare is able to get her to eat by make a “gravy” out of the dry food. I guess she soaks it until it turns to a mushy liquid and then pours it over the dry food. Hand feeding was a common occurrence as well. I think we’ve tried a million different methods over the years and it can be quite frustrating. After much trial & error (mostly error) I found something that works about 98% of the time. Sometimes I still have to get on the floor and hand-feed her. Also, make sure to slowly transition if you're going to switch foods so there's no tummy upset. Best of luck! Just be patient and you guys will get there!!! |
Compare ingredient lists on each bag...what's different? Is the main protein source or carb different...? If so, you may want to switch foods. I'm not a fan of RC - way too much corn, which I think can be activating toward allergies in dogs, so I stay FAR away from it. I'd feed something that is higher protein rather than higher carb for a dog...like Natures Logic Venison, Natures Variety Raw Boost, Wellness Core, Solid Gold Wee Bits. |
Interesting, my pet food supply girl told me the royal canin is pretty bland and not a huge fave due to obvious lack of taste. |

I've applied this logic to her food, too, ever since you told me a long time ago this same thing. Ljsmith (op) there is a wealth of information about this very thing, you'll learn a ton if you ever get a chance to look it up! |
