Chicken and Rice Meals Lucy has an enlarged heart and last week woke up ill with fever and in pain. The vet did urine and blood tests, and a couple of x-rays. The tests came back ok but apart from her enlarged heart, the x-rays showed some arthritis and an inflammation in her intestines. The vet changed one of her heart medicines and added Stride Plus (long-term vitamins for the arthritis) and Loxicom (for short-term pain). I'm not sure how old Lucy is, perhaps 8 the vet said, she's a rescue yorkie. I'm giving her small meals of chicken and rice until she's fully recovered and she is almost back to her normal playful self. My question is - exactly how much do you feed chicken and rice to a 3.4 kg (7.5 lb) yorkie who is sick? I normally feed her Royal Canin Adult Yorkie kibble and Prince Pouches for small dogs (petprinces.com) - what do you think about these for a Yorkie like Lucy? I'm not quite sure how she got the inflammation in her intestines but she does eat poop when she can get away with it, I've tried everything to stop her doing it, now I accompany her each time she goes outside in the garden and that is very often as she's on diuretics. Thank you :animal36 |
Lucy Hello. Sorry to hear that little Lucy has these health issues. Great that she is doing well on the chicken and rice. As for quantity, I don't know exactly, but I would give a similar volume to her usual food and see if she does ok on that. Perhaps after that you could try the Royal Canin canned for digestive issues? I use Hills prescription ID kibble and canned for my dog with GI issues and I think RC does a similar product. Hope she gets better from the GI problems soon and that the heart issue can be well controlled. Please let us know how she does. |
I agree, give her the same volume as her regular food. Maybe a little more if she seems hungry. That is what I do when my boys are on the fresh chicken and rice. They normally have 1/4 cup of their kibble, so I give them a little more than 1/4 cup of the cooked food plus little chicken bit rewards here and there. I would discuss the food with your vet. Ask what she/he recommends for a heart healthy diet. The fat content and general richness of the pouches and the RC might be too much. It could be a factor in her gastro problems too. My Teddy can be sensitive that way. Best wishes for your Lucy. |
Lucy I agree that a discussion of food with the vet would be a good idea. I did mention that I feed Prescription food to my boy with GI issues, and that has to be prescribed by a vet. Certainly a lower fat diet would probably be good for a heart condition as well as a GI issue. Most general dog foods are high fat. By the way. I got a weird email from an unknown address last night for a forwarded post on this site. I did not get the post from Maximo in an email. Did anyone else get such a strange forwarded reply to a post on YT? |
Aw sorry to hear about Lucy's health issues. When my babies get sick, I feed them chicken as well. They get the same volume as what they usually get in kibble or a little more. Boiled chicken breast contains a lot of water, so I found that they always seemed hungry still afterwards (which is great because they had an appetite despite being sick!). I try not to give them too much though because usually when they are sick and on the chicken / rice diet, their GI system needs to take a break anyway. I prefer to give them small meals throughout the day. Oh and, if you're unfamiliar with the boiled chicken diet, I found that when they eat this, they poop much less and their poop is smaller. So don't be alarmed if she doesn't poop one day. My dogs LOVE to eat poop, so I can sympathize. I never walk them without a leash outside. But even then, they manage to eat something bad somewhere, somehow. :p Hope Lucy recovers soon! |
Thank you for all your advice. Lucy is back to normal today, playing with her toys. She does cough a little bit when she plays with her toys but her breathing is better. Before she got ill I noticed that she had a lot of gas and that's another reason why I felt I should change her food, especially the Prince pouches. My vet suggested Britcare Senior Dog Food Hypoallergenic but it seems to have a lot of rice in it. There is another Britcare Senior Dog Food Grain Free but it's Light and Lucy isn't overweight. I'm not exactly sure what to look for with a dog which has both GI and heart problems - but certainly low fat as suggested here. |
These are the links for the dog food I mentioned: https://www.brit-petfood.com/product...-lamb-and-rice https://www.brit-petfood.com/en/prod...mon-and-potato |
