Constant scratching of jaw :confused:This is so frustrating I don't know what to do. Please, I'll be happy to receive any and all suggestions. Both of my precious girls are scratching day and night. I've checked and can't find anything there but they are both loosing their beards. The hair is breaking off. I've used coconut oil, Vetericyn Plus (otc), and the vet had prescribed EnteDerm. Nothing is working. I normally wash their faces and brush their teeth every day. I thought maybe it might be drying out their skin but it looks perfectly normal. What is so weird is that they both do it. They eat grain free and I add Apple Cidar Vinegar to their drinking water. I've recently purchased Omega-3 supplement with wild anchovy and sardine oil. |
Are they scratching only at their jaw, or other spots too? If only the jaw, I would suspect something related to eating and drinking is affecting them both. What kind of bowls/plates do you use for food and water? Plastic can be an irritant to many pets. Some dogs will react to stainless steel. We switched to glass custard bowls for water and porcelain plates for food. Make sure dishes/bowls are cleaned daily, after each meal. Another possibility is that the jaw is always wet and allowing yeast to grow. Or perhaps they are reacting to too many treatments to the jaw area? Max had a couple of dry black spots on his chin near the lip line recently. I wasn't sure if they were normal because I never looked that closely at his skin there before. I gently scrubbed them during bath time and made sure to dry his chin well. The black spots went away. |
One more suggestion: always check eyes for stray hairs when you see your pups scratching. My boys will scratch anywhere from chin to ears to shoulders when they have hair stuck in their eyes. |
Are the 2 dogs related...? If yes, then I'd think some like allergies in both. If not related, then I'd think something contagious like ringworm (which can itch in dogs and cause hair loss), mites, flea bites, or something chemical perhaps. Do they lick or chew at their paws...? If yes, think allergies. Read more about allergies here: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html |
