Crazy after nueter HELP Hello all , So I had both of my fur babies spayed and neutered yesterday . Well let me just say, right now it feels like the absolute worst decision ever. Faith our little girl is 7 months old and doing great.. Tupac however our 2 year old boy is not making this easy on us at all. Since we got in the car to bring him home he is overwhelmed with trying to hump and mount faith. It has been non stop since getting home 730 last night. He tried all night and all day and when I crate him so he will stop this sudden behavior he's yelping to get out the second I open the crate he's running to attack her. He will not even eat not bc he isn't hungry but bc he has tunnel vision to get to her. Has anyone else experienced this hyper-mounting activity they day of and after nuetering? |
Sounds like he's quite overwhelmed. For the sake of a safe recovery for both of them, if I were in your shoes, I would do whatever I could to separate them for now. I'd stick to that very strictly for at least for an entire week. They should be restrained regardless and not run around the first 5 days to ensure the surgery incision heals well (and doesn't get infected or open up). For both my boy and girl, I crated them for 7 days and only let them out for potty breaks. It sounds really sad, but I felt like it was best for them to rest and not to move around at all. The worst thing would be if they accidentally jumped and opened up their incision. I'd be devastated! I had mine neutered and spayed separately because of their age difference, so I never experienced this. I imagine he's just readjusting to the change in his hormones? It probably doesn't help that there's a change in her hormones too, which is confusing him. |
Even when they are separated he just whines for her. Noting we are doing is making that any, better. I tried to crate him and he keeps jumping up in the crate to try and open it. |
I would call the vet, maybe they can give you something for him to calm down. He needs not to be active and heal from his surgery, all this hopping around is not good for him. |
I did call them. They said if he is still doing it Friday call back it could be the anesthia .... im so so so so angry |
Well, you'll have to let him whine (if it's just a lot minor whining). Or maybe distract him and give him a treat dispensing chew toy to preoccupy him inside the crate. How big is your crate? If he's jumping around in the crate (or if he was never crated before the surgery, which would explain why he's freaking out), then you might want to follow Matese's advice to get the vet to prescribe a sedative to calm him down. He really can't jump around... it's very risky if the surgery was only yesterday. Also, try not to be angry around your pups. They'll feed off your emotions. You freak out = they freak out. You acting calm = bigger chance they'll act calm. If you're not happy with your vet, perhaps you can call around other local vets and ask for their opinion on what to do? |
I love my vet and the staff. I'm very very patient with my dogs 1000% . Maybe I should of been more clear as to where my frustration is. I'm frustrated and angry that now after the neuter he is acting like a horny teenager lol and I'm scared his gonna hurt himself. The crate jumping around is certainly bc he has never been crated. I'm wondering if maybe since my girl was also done yesterday could she be giving off a type of scent that's attracting him to her |
Okay, well that's good you're patient with your dogs, in which case, you have nothing to worry about. This technically will pass. Keep them separated while they're recovering. Being angry won't really help :p just do what you can to prevent running around and jumping. And yes, I'd believe that the change in behaviour is likely due to the change in hormone levels with both the neuter/spay surgery. |
Today was a much better day . Now they both just want to play and I feel bad bc I can't let them... 11 more days |
lol, neuter / spay is harder on us then it is on the pups. Stay strong, keep them calm even tho they look well enough to play. Glad to hear Tupac has finely calmed down, poor lil guy. |
