Ant Hi all, My Sasha just ate one grape seed that fell of my table. I was just too late to stop her. She weighs about 8 pounds. Do you think she will be okay, or should I rush her to the vet? Another question: She is now 15 months old and having her first season. I cannot bear to see her suffer like this. She gets what must be uterus contractions, and then yelps with pain. I would like to have her spayed as soon as is safe for her. Is 15 months too young? |
Welcome to YT, your female is 15 months old and is having her FIRST heat. Are you sure you didn't miss the first one and this is her second one? Females come into heat between 6 and 8 months old. When you took your baby in for her last vaccine didn't your vet advise you to have her spayed before her first heat which is usually 6 /7 months old. To answer your question NO she is NOT to young to be spayed. If she is in heat now they will not spay her, heat is a 3 week cycle. When she is finished I believe it is best to wait 2 weeks after her cycle is finished then she can be spayed. As far as her eating a grape seed you should call your vet ask their advise. And PLEASE spay your girl ASAP. |
I don't think she should be yelling out in pain from being in heat, I would call the vet asap! |
Grape seed and pain I agree with lovetodream. It is not a normal thing for your girl to be crying in pain and all. You should get her to a vet right away. You could call first to talk to the vet. There must be another reason for her behaviour. It is just coincidental that it is happening at the same time of her heat.P lease let us have an update on her situation. Hope it is not serious and she gets well soon. Tell them when you call or go in about the grape seed. It could possibly be the cause.hu |
Thank you for your replies. The reason she wasn't spayed earlier was because she was recovering after a severe reaction to a heartworm drug. I used a different vet to my current vet, and the former vet gave her the heartworm pill without my consent during one of her puppy shots. It took her all of 12 months and a special diet to recover, and then her season began. I very nearly lost her. The vet did examine her a day after I posted this thread and found nothing wrong. According to him some small breed dogs do yelp when getting uterus contractions during a season because of a low pain threshold, especially during a first season. He also confirmed that this is indeed her first season, and pointed out that her nipples were still undeveloped (just little dots with no tissue). They have developed now since her visit to the vet, and are now actual little nipples. He has agreed to spay her at the end of her season, which will be about two weeks from now. I now have an embarrassing question. She is now on her eleventh day of season, and wants to get to a male urgently. Obviously that is impossible, since I do not want her to have puppies. She cannot get out to try and find a male, so she tries to use my arm as a substitute. She gets very desperate, and hyperventilates when she is like that. Is there anything at all that I can do to alleviate this? Any medicine that she can take perhaps? The vet says to let her be and that she will get over it, but I feel so sorry for her. Finally, she was fine after the grape seed. The vet says that grape seeds don't have the same effect as grapes or grape juice, because the chemical construction of grape seeds differ from that of grapes. Thanks again for your advice, Ant |
Some years back I had two females that were not spayed, (my stupidity) when they came into season only one would hump her toys the other one was ok. I would just let your girl be, discourage her using your arm, give her a toy to use. Her cycle will soon be over, you will have her spayed and her need to hump will be over. And BTW, there is no such thing as asking an "embarrassing" question lol. |
Thank you so much for your reply. I will definitely try the "toy-method". Cannot wait for her to be spayed though. It will break me if she ever has to go through this again. :) |
Once she is spayed she will be safe and most importantly she will be healthy. Hope you stick around YT, there is much you can learn about this awesome little breed. |
Thank you so much. She really is an awesome little dog. Yorkies are so dainty compared to other breeds. And they have a particularly keen sense of instinct. Nothing gets past her observational antennae. For example: She knows that my son will be around about ten minutes before he actually pitches. And she goes and sits a t door waiting for for him. :) I will definitely stick around, thank you. :) |
