Red sore spot on leg and dry skin on back Hi, Our yorkie West is 3 now, he has had this before where he gets flaky skin on his back, which show up as little red spots with flaky skin around them. We took him to the vets and it vanished after some shampoo we were given. But it's now come back, and he has a larger one on his back leg, does anyone have any idea what it is? Hi and welcome :). Looks like pyoderma to me - which is an overgrowth of staph intermedius on dogs. For localized infections (in one area; often called "hot spots"), Mupirocin ointment (requires vet prescription) may get rid of it. For systemic/wider-spread infections, the gold standard for treatment is Simplicef x 30 days. Just as important, though, is trying to figure out *why* this infection has occurred in the first place - bc skin infections are always secondary to something else. Does your kiddo have allergies? Is he itching part of the year or all year...? |
Many thanks Wylie for your reply, we didn't want to return to the vets as they never seem to get to the bottom of it...just charge a lot of money !! I just showered him using a shampoo which treats any antifungal infections on the skin. We used it before and it cleared it up, but you are right, it must be an allergie which has brought it back for the second time. It flared up the first time shortly after a visit to a new groomers. So we also got a sensitive shampoo. We are going to swap our detergent and fabric conditioner and clean our bedding and his and see if that makes a difference using a sensitive one. He does lick his paw all year around, he gets obsessed with it can get quite nasty when you try to stop him. We have been to the vets various times and they haven't really helped to find out why he is doing it. I have just bought Yumega dog supplement for itchy dogs, and using this on his food now, my friend had the same issue and she said he has now stopped doing it. |

Dog My friends Yorke had dry skin and itching. She is allergic to chicken and poultry. We worked with the vet to get her off that food that made her scratch. Now she eats a beef base food. I bet your dog has allergies and I hope you can get it cured. Chicken is a big allergen. |
It looks similar to when Callie breaks out from allergys and ends up with a skin infection. Probably need to head to the vet. |
