Puppy stopped growing Please Help :'( Hi all, My sister and I both got our babies at around the same time. My baby was 11 weeks and just over 3 pounds. Exactly 1 week later she got her Faith and she was 8 weeks and about 2 lbs. Hope has grown perfectly and at almost 6 months is over 5 lbs now. Faith, however, stopped growing entirely for a long time and has only put on a little over a lb. Can this happen and she still be healthy or should we be concerned about something like a liver shunt? Thank you so much. |
Yorkies grow at different rates depending on genetics. My boys are full brothers from different litters and had different growth patterns their first year. Teddy grew slower than Max. Your sister could have BATs blood testing done to rule out the probability of shunt. It's not a bad idea to have it done on all Yorkies. I wouldn't worry though unless there are other symptoms. |
Thank you. Yes after all the things I've read actually scared myself into planning on having Hope tested too just in case. Thank you for a little reassurance |
One of the breeders/exhibitors here had a tiny girl who didn't grow much at all her first year. Then she shot up her second year and doubled her size. Strange things do happen when no physical ailment is present. :) |
Thanks! That is so weird.. I pray that's what it is and I am just overreacting. |
If she is healthy I would not worry. I was soooo happy when my Remy finally reached 4 lbs at one year. She has long legs and looked so thin to me. Well now... by the end of her second year she was a little over 5 lbs. They all have different growth patterns I guess. side note she was very sick a year past and the medication caused her to gain weight and now we call her our micro pig. She is well now and slowly loosing the weight .. so all good. |

You reminded me, Teddy was a very skinny puppy compared to his brother Max. He scared me because he was so thin. That is just the way he is built, much finer structure than Max and a fast metabolism. Teddy has put on muscle as he matured though. Still amazes me that they eat the same amount of food, but Teddy remains thinner. |
