Feeding Yorkie Puppy Hi, We'll be picking up our 11-week-old pup on Saturday. It's been two years since our other dog was a puppy. We plan to feed it Blue Buffalo Canned puppy food and the tins say one can per 5 pounds per day. I'm not sure how heavy an 11-week is -- I know he's fairly normal in size.... So I'm wondering either how to weigh him or how much roughly is normal. I gather he'll need 4 meals a day for two more weeks and then move on to 3? Thanks. Linda |
What is he currently on? It is always a good idea to transition slowly when changing foods. I think frequent small meals are better for everyone for the most part but it is good that you are prepared to be extra watchful of that little guys blood sugar levels while he is so young and tiny. Although the breed standard is that Yorkie's do not exceed seven pounds there do tend to be a lot of variances so it is hard to say how much your little guy will weigh. I advocate for weighing puppies and measuring food myself :) that way you know for sure what your little guy is getting. Congratulations! |
Congrats on your new puppy!! Please feed your new baby whatever the breeder is feeding for now. Once you see the vet, which is hopefully in a few days of your puppy being home, you can ask the vet what to recommend. When you do plan to change the food, do it gradually, their stomach is so sensitive so you don't want your baby to have any issues. So gradually add new food to the old food and see how your puppy does...I did this with my 2 Yorkie girls.... Good luck. |
Feed what the breeder is feeding for a couple months and then switch otherwise it will be to much stress. Also I wouldn't switch to blue buffalo they care more and advertising then their actual product and there was some mislabeling being done, they are not trust worthy. |
Thanks! We'll definitely use the food that the breeder has used for a time. I'm reluctant to use kibble though for long -- I could be wrong but my experience with it is that it encourages "grazing" -- just leaving a dish with the pup eating when he wishes. When my 2-year-old was a baby we found we had a hard time judging how much he was eating and didn't realize he was getting sick. And I know now that he's full-size that he'd gobble up any food that puppy left. Linda |
When I brought my pup home (and all past pups), I "tried" to transition slowly, but if they had no problem within about 48 hours of my adding new food, I did just switch them. Most of them had been on crappy food, and I feed raw, so I couldn't get them off (for example) pedigree puppy food fast enough. I kept the baggy of kibble they sent me with, and I used it for treats. Agreed about the blue buffalo, there are better foods out there. |

Not a chance I would wait months because they "might get" a tummy upset. Not that I haven't had a dog like that, I have one now. He doesn't get big changes, or he gets diarrhea, or gas, but he can tolerate small changes every day now. As a pup the breeder told me he was fed raw. I drove down her driveway and he vomited a pile of kibble.... I went very slowly for him, GSD aware known to have digestive issues. |

My friend had a problem with her dogs grazing. I suggested she buy Triplett canned green tripe and mix and large teaspoon with their food. So I brought some to her house and showed her and her two dogs ate their entire dinner licked the bowls clean |
Also my pup was fed a good kibble from the breeder and I switched him in his first week home to a raw diet with no stress or digestive issues. Little booger nugget loved the stuff so I was very lucky and happy about that |
