When should I spay (considering these variables) Hi! My Scout is going to be 19 weeks/about 4.5 months old tomorrow. I'm trying to weigh the various advice I've seen and heard regarding her circumstances about when to have her spayed. - Shes a girl (clearly!) a lot of the advice I've read says to spay before first heat, but the breeder advised waiting as long as possible and after her first heat, if possible, to make sure she's fully developed. - My vets reminder system tells me I should do it mid next month. - She doesn't have any adult teeth coming in yet. Scooter, my male Maltese didn't have his all in when he was neutered, and now he has a couple of doubled up canines that he'll need to go back under anesthesia to have pulled. - She has inguinal hernias, which they'd fix when she gets spayed. So I guess my question is... Should I have her spayed sooner (when the vet recommends, before first heat and get the hernias fixed ASAP) or later (after first heat, when we know what baby teeth might need to be pulled)? She's just under 3 lbs right now, so weight shouldn't be a factor for either choice. |
I would follow my vets advise, and with hernias needing removal I don't know how wise that would be to wait. Your vet knows what is best for your baby. I understand the concern about the baby teeth, did you discuss this with your vet? If not, maybe you should. |
I struggle with the same decision (although my girl doesn't have hernias that need surgery). Some experts say wait until after first hear and others shay around 6 months of age, before the first heat. My Izzy is schedule next month, she'll be 7 months. I'm nervous! |
I would do it at 6 months before first heat. |
