Is tooth extraction necessary?! My boy Grady is getting neutered today and I asked the vet to check his teeth as I read it is a good time to extract ones that haven't fallen out yet at this time. So far, all of his top incisors have grown in front of his baby teeth which aren't loose at all. He also has one left on the bottom and a couple fangs that are growing in crowded. The vet called this am to tell me there are 9 teeth total that would need to be extracted. Unfortunately, I love in Canada where each tooth costs $150 to extract! I find this extremely outrageous and can only afford the 2 fangs that could cause problems right now.... Just wondering if you think it is necessary to get all of the teeth removed or if they may eventually fall out in the next few months? I can not afford $150 per tooth! Any suggestions?! |

It is very necessary because it can mess up the alignment of his teeth which can cause issues. Food will also get stuck between them and cause rotting of the teeth. |
They definitely need to go. But, you should look at your options and see if you can find a less pricey vet to go to. I've never heard of such expensive teeth extractions- I had two infected ones yanked from my chihuahua along with a dental and it was 25 a tooth plus the dental. |
You're totally sure it wasn't $150 total for all the baby teeth....? Bc otherwise, WOW. But yeah, they do need to come out or you'll have worse problems later... |
$150 for each baby tooth is ridiculous. That would be pricey even for an adult tooth. Shop around for another vet. All the vets in my area charge $5 - $10US for baby teeth. If there are a whole bunch to be extracted, the vet comes up with a reasonable charge. My neighbor's tiny Yorkie had to have 2 whole rows of baby teeth removed and the vet charged a reasonable fee, rather than for each individual tooth. |
Yes, I am 100% sure. It cost $300 just for the 2 fangs to be removed yesterday. My total vet bill was $750 for neutering, pain meds, 2 teeth removed and a microchip. I believe in Canada it is different in terms of prices.. so far I haven't found anything less than $150 a tooth. Although I also don't have pet insurance so I have to pay these full prices. Does everyone in the states have pet insurance? or are the teeth still around $15 each. If so that is nuts, maybe I will have to bring him to the USA! |

I paid about $350 - $375 to have Max neutered, 6 baby teeth extracted, pain meds. If we were closer to Washington, DC, it would have been in the $700s like your bill, but not because of teeth. The price of a pet dental cleaning in the US can vary widely. Some charge only hundreds, whereas big cities usually run $1500 and up. A large part of that is the cost of real estate and staff salaries. My vet charges $5 - $50 for adult tooth extractions, depending on difficulty. Xrays are expensive, $99 each. Xrays are recommended when cleaning and pulling adult teeth. Base charge for small dog anesthesia/IV and cleaning is a little over $300. |
Also, just wondering how many days before Grady can chew on his toys/bones. The vet didn't really go into any of those details with me. I know he shouldn't have them because of infection but I just don't know how many days before he can play again! |

When adult teeth are extracted, a stitch is put in, antibiotics are usually prescribed. Usually soreness will cause the dog to limit him or herself from chewing. You could give your vet's office a call and see what they recommend. |
Buddybear just had a dental cleaning and they removed 3 baby teeth and 3 adult teeth.....meds included it was under $350....... It's called Pet Dental and that is all they do. My groomer was amazed at how low the price was. Pet Dental might be a "chain" but im not sure. Yes those extra teeth need to come out the sooner the better. |
