Baby doesn't like ACANA Hi everyone, I'm having trouble with my baby girl food, she is 7 months old and weights 3 pounds, all her life she ate ROYAL CANIN XSMALL BREED FOR PUPPY, she loves this, literally LOVE she gets cray over this food and finished in 2 minutes... BUT.. sadly this food makes her itch the vet told me it is probably the chicken in the RC, So I researched, read reviews and I look here in the community and I decided to give my baby ACANA SINGLES, Im making the transition of RC giving now 25% RC 75% ACANA lamb apple flavor, and now she is miserable :( she won't eat it she looks at her plate and choose the RC and leave the ACANA I left the food out there and thought she will get hangry, and no... She is hangry but she wants her RC food,is really sad for me, seeing this. When she used to enjoy her meals so much... Please girls I need your advice... Please can you recommend me and brand that your yorkies like??? With no chicken on it.? And that's recommended for puppy? |
Is the Acana kibble bigger? Three pounds is pretty small, our smallest is five and seems to desire or prefer smaller kibble. Some of the Fromm has small kibble. At 7 months you "might" want to still be looking at using puppy food though. Is the Acana a puppy food? https://frommfamily.com/about/questi...r-star-kitten/ ACANA Singles | ACANA Pet Foods |
I know acana is all life stages so its good for puppies. However not sure how big the lamb and apple is but i feed the heritage flavor and the bites seem a bit too big for a 3 lb puppy. But maybe the lamb/apple is smaller. There are also other acana flavors without chicken you could try. Orijen as well . You could also try soaking it in water and so its a little softer and try it like that. Or add a litle canned food to it to help . |
Popped a few things into Chewey's filters, it came up with these: https://www.chewy.com/s?rh=c%3A288%2...%3AExtra+Small |

the single formula is for all ages. I wanted so bad she likes this because I read that's is a better food than royal canin. and royal canin doesn't have hypoallergenic food for puppy |
I will try Quote:

acana is for all life stages... I would soak it overnight, my guys needed it wet when I first switched them |
Environmental allergies are more common then food allergies so not sure why your vet would go straight to food allergies but you can get a prescription Royal Canin food that is hypoallergenic and they have it in small breed and she might really like that. |

https://www.chewy.com/natural-balanc...ited/dp/104681 Looks like if you can find it local to you, local store, it's $18 for 4.5 lbs. Other than that, I know nothing about this brand other than what I just read. Kibble is tiny, in the reviews it looked like someone even complained about how small it was! LOL Hope it works for ya! Always check for recall info before buying, all brands, any food. |

A healthy non itchy dog may do fine on it. But this puppy is already itchy while on royal canin. |

And hypoallergenic food aside... Grains and corns are best avoided weather its enviroment or food. It makes no difference if they are actually allergic to this fillers, they aggravate skin problems and make them worse. Thats all i was trying to say . |

I guess i just would never feed a puppy a food that has rice and soy protein As main ingredients and no meat content. . They need good quality food for proper growth and development. Hypoallergenic food is usually a last resort of you cant find any food your dog can tolerate. |

You can usually return the food if you got it at pet store. I know Petsmart and Petco both let you return if the dogs don't eat it. |
I don't buy the grains and chicken theory. MOST allergies are environmental....I believe only about 5% are from food. (that percentage might be off, but the point is it is usually not the food). I feed a lot of pups and have fed a lot of pups over the years who ate food with grains and continue to eat foods with grains and they are fine! The ones who have had allergies were tested (simple blood test but it is a bit pricey..worth it to me) and they had environmental allergies. Their allergies were controlled with meds and they continued on grains and chicken without any issues at all. If you change your pup's food and she continues to itch, you might want to put her back on the RC since she loves it and it is a good food from a reputable company; and get her tested to see what she is allergic to. You might find some valuable information here: www.petdiets.com If you go to the FAQ section, you can ask a question and the vet nutritionist will answer it. |
I'm right in the middle of switching my 6 month old Nemo from Royal Canin to Acana. Just a personal choice and opinion its seems to be better quality. What ive been doing was slowly mixing the Acana in with the Canin and then adding more and more. Kind of like phasing it out. I think i'm lucky though, I don't seem to have a picky eater at all and he inhales his food so I'm not sure the kibble size matters in my case. Oye I've even tried several methods to slow down the eating. Good luck. |
Picky eater, sensitive stomach Hi, I fed mostly Canadian made foods. By law, their pet food has to up to the same standard as human food. You didn't say what flavor Acana you tried. They have some great sounding mixes. Who wouldn't want pork & pears for dinner? I also bought Petcurean "Go", Canidae, Oijens (made by same company as Acana, just higher in protein and more wild caught ingredients, pheasant, boar, bison, wild turkey. Angus would not eat the Grasslands flavor. Go has several different varieties for sensitive diet. Check with the pet store where you buy your dog food. I found that if my dog wouldn't eat it, they'd take the food back. It saved a lot of money while hunting for foods he would eat. Royal Canin has a variety your vet has to write a prescription for you to buy it. My vet wasn't wild about RC because it has grains, fillers--ingredients that are common problems for dogs w/sensitive stomachs. A great resource is The Dog Food Advisor website. This fellow does lots of research/label reading. He's not be holding to any pet food company. And he keeps an updated list of animal food/treat recalls...there are lots of them. I forgot to ask, does your dog pass any mucus I her stool? That's a sign that there is stomach upset. Are you giving you pooch over the counter Pepcid? My vet suggested it. I gave my dog 1/2 of a 10mg tablet 2x a day. No extra strength, just plain low dose tablet. Check with your vet first. If your pooch still has signs that something's wrong, I urge you to locate a well regarded Advanced Veterinary Internal Medicine vet. Yorkies are so small, sometimes they don't have much wiggle room before a little upset becomes a big problem. I wouldn't think you want to wait for full-blown pancreatitis. Any Get references for any vet you seek out that you don't know. I had some experiences I'd rather not repeat. Do you know what they call the last in their class at vet school? They call them Doctor. Good luck. I'll keep you and your pooch in my thoughts. Hi-EOI :dogwalk: Quote:

Well, the problem with the dog food advisor in my opinion is that he focuses more on ingredients rather than quality control and/or success rates/results of feeding various foods. Because of this, he has had many of his highly ranked dog foods end up on the recall lists. He is a human dentist who has made a lot of money doing this ranking of dog foods. He has made people question the validity of prescription foods that could save their pups' lives. I have met many of these people over the years. Thankfully, many do listen to reason and have tried the RX foods their vets recommended with great success. That myth about vets making money on dog food is simply that, a myth. Oh, they make a small amount for handling it; but that is not a huge money maker for them. They provide it because it is necessary for certain dogs and has real research data to prove it. This is a great read: http://www.wsava.org/sites/default/f...et%20Foods.pdf I personally won't even read the DFA opinions any more...I did for a time and found it not for me. Instead, if I want nutritional recommendations, I review the information that is given by Diplomates of the ACVN. American College of Veterinary Nutrition | ACVN www.petdiets.com The person who runs the pet diets website is a highly respected veterinary nutritionist. Here is her resume: https://www.petdiets.com/userfiles/f...bbrev%20CV.pdf https://weethnutrition.wordpress.com/ |
Royal Canin DOES INDEED have hypoallergenic food, but you have to get it from/thru the vet.....they have a hydrolyzed protein formula, they have a select duck or rabbit or white fish dog food, as well as a potato formula....all you need to do is get a script from your vet and you can get the Rx Royal Canin.....if your baby has been on RC and loves it, stick with it! |
