Which is best, anesthesia free dental cleanings, or going under anesthesia and getting a thorough cleaning below the gumline?

Anesthesia. Deeper cleaning, reduced risk of injury, and xrays can be done to spot problems that are not visible at the surface. If a tooth needs to be extracted, the dog is already under and the extraction can be done right away.

If you're gonna do it I would say do it all the way; And Awake at home with a soft puppy toothbrush you can brush teeth :D

Going under, for sure! Spend the money there and get it done thoroughly as possible.

We do a dental cleaning once a year :)

Do you also brush their teeth daily or twice daily, in addition, because my vet thought it was enough to just come in monthly for nonanesthetic cleaning. So if you do cleanings once a year with anesthesia, do you also need to maintain at home? How safe is putting the little ones under?:)

There is no set time because it is different for all dogs, you should have your vet evaluate their teeth at least once a year.

My Ruger will be 2 in January and has never had his teeth cleaned. I do brush his teeth every night. He is also a big chewer so I guess that helps too. When we do have to have a cleaning I will choose to go all the way with it. Like other posts said the Doctor will get a better look and a better cleaning.

I would be such a better person if I brushed daily but alas! :) we do brush- less frequently this last year and she has more tarter build up as a result. We are back on the train, I think twice weekly realistically. We do a twice a day dental treat too. By ark naturals. Some tartar build up (recent) but no decay, no gum disease, no toothless.

Jackson had one around 2.5yrs old, I believe, and then again around... 5? I can't remember exactly. He will be 8 in October and is due again according to the vet by either end of this year or early next year.

All depends on individual dog. Jackson's teeth are actually pretty decent for an almost 8yr old yorkie according to the vet. They're really not terrible but he's definitely going to need a cleaning soon.
