Bully Sticks? And other post-teeth pulling things..
 
Back again. My Yorkie recently had 7 teeth pulled (a little less than a month ago). We brushed his teeth every day for years, but the vet said seven of his teeth were bad/infected and had to come out. He's recovered, thankfully, but I'm trying hard to prevent any future issues with teeth as much as possible.

After about two weeks post-teeth pulling, we gave him a Greenie. He ate it one day but spit it out the second and refuses to eat it.

Next, we tried the CET dental chew, which he did chew for a little bit but doesn't show any interest in now.

Then we decided to try an unscented bully stick. He's never had this before. He licked it and kind of looked like he might want to chew on it, but he hasn't done so.

Any ideas?!?!? Any other Yorkies out there seem uninterested in bully sticks? I feel like I keep reading how all Yorkies love them.

It's actually a good thing he doesn't like them because they can break teeth. My yorkie broke a tooth on one. A lot has to do with genetics but I would bush them as often as possible with CEY toothpaste.

Thanks! I've tried brushing his teeth. He was a lot better when he was younger. But he literally will hide when he sees the toothbrush or toothpaste, especially in the last few years. He's very feisty whenever we do try to brush his teeth and will nip us. I don't know what to do :(

The first bully stick I got for Cody he didn't touch, every other day I would pull it out and offer it to him, now he loves them. They are very hard when new, once your pup starts one the end will get soft and easier to chew. Every other day or twice a week offer him the bully stick, I keep Cody's wrapped in tin foil , he'll chew on it for an hour, when he goes for water I take it, wrap it up and give it to him 3 / 4 days later. Cody is a big boy 12 lbs, I get the long bully sticks, if I let him he will chew the entire thing in a few hours lol.

The biggest issue with that is the moist parts will grow bacteria that can make them sick.

Seriously? Here I was making sure her bully sticks were the requisite size for not choking and that they were from quality ingredients. I'm not going to stop her from chewing on them but I'm wondering if a week or two tops would cut this from happening very little if at all.

She's really loving the lamb ears, but she won't allow any one but me to touch those, so it's not really feasible until she's over this guarding. Thanks for the info. I seriously had no idea.

Buddybear loves bully sticks but his new vet said no more as they can break teeth. She suggested rawhide chews, which can get lodged in the stomach.
After lots of consideration Buddybear will still get bully sticks occasionally as I rather him loose a tooth than stomach surgery.
Nyla bones are as hard as bully sticks jmho and they can chew off little pieces. Vet said everything has risks.
I did buy some Dingo Munchy Stix at Wal-Mart that a YTer recommended and he loves those too..

Yeah, on Easter chewie swallowed pieces of an adult nylabone. Scariest thing ever and I was an absolute basket case. never will touch those again.

I see this post as Emma is chewing her Bully Stick. I do believe that anything we have or give our dogs is a risk and with any chew we just have to monitor it accordingly.

Emma likes the bully stick, nyla bones not so much and I don't give anything that looks like plastic (i.e. greenies). I find the benefit of the bully stick is it helps keep her occupied for a bit so she's not chewing my sandals and it helps keep the plaque low on her teeth.

Any chew that you leave moist for a long period of time can grow bacteria.

Darcy likes Nyla bones. I have always been fearful he can swallow pieces, but I do not believe we've had an issue. We do monitor him. But right now, he's not going for the bully sticks. Not enthused about those right now. :animal-pa
