My bitch is in heat ? My Yorkie has a vulva that is really swollen and feels hard to the touch. Is this normal? She is constantly licking it as well. Her urine is yellow and pees throughout the day. Sometimes a bit and sometimes a lot at once. First of all, is it normal for the vulva to be hard when in heat ? Could this be an infection? Secondly, her licking it all the time, is this normal? My 3 mth old male tries to hump her and licks her there as well. She is also trying to hump our arm which my hubby lets her once in a while. He says " the poor girl is suffering" and he let's her. Should he let her so this? What can I do to help her. |
A vet is the best person to answer your questions. For eg hard while descriptive is a relative term. Licking is common as many females do a good job of keeping themself clean. The vulva will swell and be firmer than normal when a female is in heat. During this time your female is vulnerable so make sure to keep her away from males even puppy males. |
More questions Thank you for the reply. Can a 3 mth old get it on with her? Are they able to get hard or pregnant her. |

We don't encourage mating We don't encourage mating at all. We don want babies. We keep him off her but he keeps trying to hump her. Can we get her spayed while her vulva is swollen? |

How do we know if she is still in heat How so we know if she is still in heat? Does the vulva go down. Not swollen any more ? |
Yes the swelling goes down. Also the intact male will show no more urgent interest in her. I usually wash the females twice during heat the second bath occurring at 21 or 22 days. This helps remove any lingering heat smells. |

I was a breeder for many years and i never had a female this swollen and she looks red, i would be on my way to a vets office ASAP she may have a bad infection that could cost her life if not treated |
She eats and drinks normal She eats and drinks normal. I did not magnify the picture. I cut the picture to just show this part. She does not cry when she pees either. I will post a picture showing the body and the vulva. It is normal skin colour even when spread open. |

Not Crying while peeing is not an indicator of good health. All I can say for me that picture is very scarey. I have very large breed females who have never ever gotten that swollen. Dogs can go from good health to ill in24 hrs. I know. You already know something is not right. Please take her to the vet. |
PLEASE take this poor girl to see a vet ASAP. Gemy is a *very* experienced breeder and has both very large dogs and yorkies - if she tells you the vulva looks abnormal, then it's ABNORMAL and needs to be cared for. Is there a reason you won't take her in...? |
