Worms? Hi, this is my first time! Webster is 10 weeks old now and was dewormed twice already, he had his 2nd inoculation on Monday. What I would like to know is why is he still "dragging" his "back side" on the floor? Is this due to worms or is it just itching? Should I cut the hair round his rectum? Other than that is he a very friendly and healthy dog, loves playing with his toys. Thanks Linda |
he needs to have his anal glands squeezed (is that the word i'm looking for?) your vet can do it. some groomers will do it as well. i've heard alot of people say they had their vet show them how to do it the first time and now they do it. i personally can't do it myself so when the time comes nala will have to go to see dr. rigby |
But sometimes worms can also do that...but if he was already dewormed, it's probably just the anal glands:) |
Worms Easy way to check. Look at his stool the next time he goes. If he has worms, which I doubt, you will see them in the stool. If he does you can buy OTC meds depending on his size and age. But it sounds like anal glands to me. |
The hair may need trimmed at his behind. If they have any "klingons" they will wipe themselves on the carpet or rug to get it off. Mine will also drag right after a behind trim. Like there's now to much air hitting there and it feels weird. Its to funny. |
Thanks for the advise, but can you just explain why the glands and what causes this, is it itchy. Last night he had a stool, kind of "slimy" and he started to cry. I took him and washed his back side and he was ok after that. Could this be due to a swollen gland or something. His stool is most of the times normal. Thanks. Linda |
Anal Glands...ew! Hello! Dragging the butt is an anal gland problem...especially if there is slimy stuff on/next to the poo! You better take care of that ASAP, my friends' puppy was dragging his butt and leaving slime next to his poo and she thought it was funny (butt dragging) and that the slimy stuff was just diarreah.. Anyway, she finally took him to the vet, his anal glands got infected and he needed SURGERY!! Not only that, the poor pup is now on pain meds and sleeping pills until he recuperates and he has TUBES in his butt that have to stay there until he is all better! It's really gross and sad for the puppy. As far as squeeing out the glands yourself, let me just say "blehhhh"! That is me VOMITING!! You have a lot of courage to do that, because I would rather pay...it's a dirty job...and the VET's gotta do it!! :) Good luck! Just get him ot the vet ASAP! |

Hello, Webster... I don't reall y know a lot about the glands, i just know that all dogs have them, but small dogs are too small to purge their own glands so usually small dogs have this. It is very common and inexpensive if you catch it right away. I do know that my friends' dog had the slime and that is the second "tell-tell" symptom (the first is the butt dragging). |
Well Baby kept scooting her butt and I took her to the vet and they released her anal glands and said it wasn't worms...well then a few weeks later I saw worms! They were tapeworms! Regular deworming doesn't get rid of them, nor does revolution. They are from fleas and rodents and such. So Baby had to take a pill and then they were gone. So maybe something to check out. Sorry about the random thoughts on this post! |
I would suggest you contact your vet, scoting could be anal glands, constipation, or anything thing elses only the vet would be able to determin. Please do not wait to long to contact them. |
