Sick 12 yr old Yorkie / input ASAP Hi Charlie is going back to the vet at 12:30 today so I'm hoping to get some responses before we leave. I know that isn't much time though. Charlie will be 12 in Sept. Friday evening about 11pm he threw-up twice. He threw-up partially digested kibble. He was restless all night. By morning he was rubbing his head a LOT on the carpet as if he was itching. I checked his tummy and it was red splotchy but no raised rash. I bathed him hoping to sooth him until the vet opened at 8:30. I took him in and they said they thought the 'rash' was a separate thing from the vomiting. They thought his bowels might be inflamed(no diarrhea at that time). They gave him 0.5ml of 50mg/ml Metronidazole twice a day, 1.25mg prednisone twice a day and 6.25mg benadryl up to 3xday. After giving the first dose that morning of pred and Benadryl he had no relief but his body seemed twitchy and he still couldn't relax, still appeared to itch. So Saturday he had 2 doses prednisone, 3 doses benadryl and 2 doses Metronidazole. Charlie then vomited several times last night. This morning the restlessness from what appeared to be itching is done but he appears very uncomfortable in the abdomen/bowels. He will lay down and then lift his but in the air, he gets up and moves every few minutes. I took him out potty and he ate grass(always does when stomach issues). Came back inside and within 10 min he was vomiting up what looked like the Metronidazole(about 2 hours after dose) and now small amounts of little mucousy blood specks. He also had pooped while outside and now his poop is pretty loose and it appeared to have mucousy blood specks. I am very afraid for him. Again, he goes to a diff vet at 12:30(mine closed sunday). Can anyone think of things it might be? He was recently checked for Diabetes and it was neg. I am going to ask about Cushings as it was mentioned here before and he was not tested yet for it. Oh, another thing he does when outside(always on leash) is lick the grass where any animal has urinated. I try to stop him but only know about it when he starts doing it. We have a LOT of wild bunnies around here. Can he catch anything from licking their urine? Any help will be appreciated. I'm freaking out a little cause Charlie has been such a healthy dog. Thank you |
No information to help you, so sorry. Praying is all I know how to do at this point. You are probably on the way to the vet. Wishing you and Charlie well. Please post a update after your vet visit!!!! |
Poor Charlie! I hope the vet can give him some relief today, and give you some answers. Has he been doing okay with his bladder? I read that he a recent infection. When it comes to tummy problems, I often think of pacreatitis first. Pancreatitis can be ruled out with a blood test called cPL. My Teddy recently had a strange episode that we think started with a hornet/wasp sting. First he appeared to have stomach cramps. Then we found where he has been stung. In the meantime, I had bathed the lower half of his body in a new shampoo. He broke out in a few hives on that part of his body. Odd things do happen, so maybe there is some correlation between Charlie's rash and tummy upset. You asked about the licking of grass where other animals have urinated: there is a risk of leptovirus contact that way. Not common, but it's there. Praying for Charlie. Please keep us updated. |
Have you had your yard sprayed for bugs? A kind of similar thing happend to my Pixi after the pest guy came. Although we use pet safe insecticide, it was to much for her little system. After seeing a vet, We were up all night and day medicating and bathing and coaxing her to drink. Now they don't go outside for a full day after pest control visits. We just use pee pads... Let us know how it goes with Charlie. Sending you my best wishes and healing thoughts!!!! |
1 Attachment(s) Thank you for your responses! Charlie has been diagnosed with Pancreatitis. I'm wondering why the vet yesterday morning when I took him in did not test for that. They don't know if Charlie got into something that caused the skin reaction and pancreatitis or if they are two separate issues. I'm leaning towards they are related due to the fact Charlie has never had skin reactions in his almost 12 yrs. He is at the hospital getting fluids(dehydrated from the vomiting), pain meds and something to coat the stomach. The blood in the vomit and stool(small amounts) concerns her due to the prednisone and possibly causing ulcer like issues in the stomach. I can go get him about 4:30pm, so in about 2 1/2 hours. They said they will go over what kind of food he can now be on. Has to be a low fat diet so I doubt he'll be on the Yorkie Royal Canin or Fromm any longer. Honestly I don't care, I just want him back home and feeling like himself again. Thank you again for your responses. Attached is a pic of Charlie I took Oct 2015 right after he turned 11. He is a very special dog:) |
Sweet Charlie. I'm glad the vet was able to determine what is ailing your baby. Sending positive thoughts for Charlie to be able to come home soon and for his speedy recovery. |
Pancreatitis question Poor Charlie is really out of it but at least the pain meds are giving him some much needed relief. Another Pancreatitis question...They said it was not necessary to withhold food even until tomorrow. They said offer him a spoonful at a time of the Royal Canin Gastro Intestinal low fat. They said if he didn't want that to offer him the boiled boneless, skinless chicken breast I made him this morning with the rice. My question is has anyone else been told it was good practice to give food after a Pancreatitis diagnosis? In humans you withhold food and water for a min of 24 hours if not more. Charlie was given IV fluids so he should be ok overnight. I'm going to follow what the vet said but it seems odd to give food tonight to him. Besides the fact I have no doubt he will NOT be interested right now. He is very out of it. |
I am not sure about your pancreatitis question but just wanted to say I hope little Charlie feels better soon. xxx |

Get Well Wishes I hope little Charlie is feeling better very soon, I know it is so hard to watch them not feeling well and not being their usual playful selves. My little 5 yr old Bella was just released from the hospital Friday night. She has been diagnosed with PLE and IBD, so I can relate. Best wishes and prayers going up! Gina |
Thank you all of you that have helped and sent well wishes to Charlie:) I took him in this morning to his regular vet to check that high dose of tramadol the other vet described and they said they have no idea why they gave him that much. They said they prescribed a lethal dose of Tramadol to Charlie. Luckily I caught that or by now I probably would not have my Charlie anymore. |
Yes, give food. My little guy just got over an attack. Studies have showed giving food early keeps the pancreatous productive. You don't want to starve it. Little at a time. Good luck prayers your way. |
I have given him some food and he ate a couple tablespoons:) I hope your little guy is much better now. Although I gave him the food and he did eat some it goes against everything I know about a moderate to severe attack of pancreatitis. How long before your guy started getting better? I'm just a bit shocked by this diagnosis still. Thank you for your input. I'm feeling a bit helpless in relieving Charles pain and discomfort. |

Honestly he only felt bad for about 3 days. Hope you have great success with your baby. Please feed him lightly. Keep his energy up. |
That's great to hear that he was doing so well after 3 days. This all started for Charlie 3 evenings ago so maybe he will turn a corner and feel much better soon. |
