pls. help fishy smell! hello everyone! i seem to have a problem. today i noticed that coco has a bit of a fishy smell coming from his rectum  . i'm wondering what this could be? has anyone else had this problem with thier baby he is now 3 1/2 months. someone pls. help! :animal-sm |
That's anew one on me. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about. I would just put in a quick call to the vet to be sure. Did you change foods or give a new treat? Some of the organic foods give off more of an odor. |
no i didn't change foods he still eats royal canine. but my hubby does like to give him alittle taste of whatever he's eating. this past weekend he got ahold of some bbq squid. i was wondering if that could be it. but he's pooped since then. so i figured that he passed that already. |
My little Misti "fishes" every so often herself. I have heard it has something to do with their anal sacks releasing fluid. I had a yorkie several years ago that also "fished" Its sick but they can't help it. |
your right! i spoke with my vet today and he says that sometimes thier anal glands need to be expressed. he says it's nothing to worry about but if not taken care of can become painful for them and reaccure. so he will be going to the vet first thing monday. |
Did your vet suggest adding fiber to the diet? Sometimes a little added fiber will cause the anal glands to lubricate and do the job nature intended them to do.. |
I dislike anal glands! My Peke's got infected and had to stay in the hospital with a hose in her butt for awhile! Snoodles every once in a while will start scooting, and then I have to express them. I was hoping she could do it on her own when she takes her morning constitutional. Am still hoping, as I hate to start doing it, as I think if they can do it themselves, it is much better! FOR SURE! no he didn't say anyhting about fiber. his appt. is monday. but i now notice that the smell comes and goes so are they just discharging on thier own? |
Thats the way I understood it when I talked to Misti's Vet that they are expelling on there own. Is it something that you notice quite often? I don't notice it all the time, its just here and there thing. Please keep us informed after his appointment on Monday. |
i sure will thanks all! :animal-sm |
My vet said usually they will expell it when they go potty. If they are scooting their butts on the floor, they are trying to expel it. She said you can wait a day or so and see if they stop the scooting which means they have done it themselves! I only had to do it twice on Snoodles. Pat |
Jess,my 10 month old yorkie, gets this ALOT.It all started a few months back, the smell would come and go every so often, she would also lick her self alot when this smell apeared so I thought she had an infection or something. But after a vet visit we were told that it was her anal glands:( They werent full or swollen, she just had a discharge every now and again which I was told is quite normal and nothing to worry about..but it DOES smell awful:( She cleans her self when this happens as the discharge is very small, but even so,the smell really bothers me and we try and keep her from kissing our faces on these days..lol. |
that's very good to knowthanks so much! :) |
