New mom Hi, I am a new mom of a Yorkie. I have had other dogs but this is my first baby Yorkie. I have so many questions and concerns that I joined this site. Prince is 17 weeks old today! He had some major health issues about 6 weeks ago but he made it though with the help of a local emergency hospital. I have two major concerns right now: 1). I think he has excessive discharge from his eyes. There are some days when he wakes up that there are "globs" in his eyes. Has anyone else experienced this? 2). He appears to have dandriff or flaking. Has anyone else dealt with this? Oh yeah...how do I find a GREAT groomer? What questions do I ask? How do I know they can shampoo and cut without hurting him? OMG....I'm 50 years old and feel like I'm back in my 20s with my first child. Please don't laugh at me. |

No need to worry about laughing! Lots of understanding here. :) Eye discharge: what color is it? Clear, white, or brownish is relatively normal. If there is a hair in the eye, the eye will produce some thickish discharge to try to protect itself. Allergies can cause more discharge. Certain foods, unique to each dog, may produce more discharge. When to be concerned: if your puppy is rubbing or pawing at his eyes, if he rubs his face on the floor or bedding, if the discharge is yellow or green. Gently lift the eyelid to check the white part of the eye. If there is redness, or if there is puffiness around the lids, then a vet visit is required. If he has globs all over his eyes, might want to check with the vet. Sometimes Yorkies suffer insufficient tear production for various reasons. Or something else could be irritating his eyes. My boys will sometimes wake up with a glob at the corner of their eyes. It's from getting their long hair in their eye at night when they snuggle. I clean it with a wet cotton ball (plain tap water) and comb with a flea comb with tightly spaced teeth. Dandruff and flaking: what kind of shampoo and conditioner are you using? Finding a good and trustworthy groomer: big challenge for Yorkies! I would start with recommendations from people with small dogs. Ideally, I would go to a groomer that allows me to stay and watch, especially with a small puppy. Personally, I have done all of my boys' grooming at home. |
Congrats and Welcome! I'm glad your pup is better. At 17 weeks he should be teething and their eyes can drain a bit more when they are doing that. My pup is about the same age and I just bathed him this morning and by the afternoon you can already see a bit of drainage. |
Congrats to you for having a new furmily member. What a cute name! Can you post a picture of him? Can't wait to see him. As I can see you are so excited and so protected with your new baby and you're worried about him. It's normal for us to act like that as a mum specially when it comes to health, behavior and proper nutrition. As you find your way around the here, you'll find out that there are a lot of information-rich thread that will surely benefit you and your pooch. Welcome to the board! |
Hi - welcome and CONGRATS! :) Puppies may have excess eye drainage due to teething, so that may be what you're seeing. Also, some dogs just have more discharge naturally. You just need to watch for it being greenish, which could mean an eye infection. Some flaking/dandruff is pretty normal w/ pups too. You could try adding a bit of coconut oil or fish oil to the diet. As for grooming, it's really impossible to know if someone will hurt your yorkie, to be honest...this is why I do all the grooming myself for my kiddos - I don't want them put at risk or vulnerable to a stranger like that. |
Btw, looks like you had 2 threads going about the the same thing, so I've merged your threads. |
Update on Prince Thanks for all of the responses. Update on Prince... 1). He does have an eye infection in his left eye and has been given some cream. The vet thinks that it should be cleared up in 5 days. 2). I've been brushing and combing him daily and there are some really big flakes...almost like cradle cap with newborns. I talked to the vet about that as well and she did recommend coconut oil but only a little because she doesn't want Prince to eat it and get sick. I am still trying to find a great groomer and have reached out to several ones in the area and none of them are comfortable with such a small puppy. He is now 2.6 lbs and the vet is struggling to see how he will reach 5 lbs. He is so sensitive and cries or whimpers about everything that I am having a hard time trying to cut or groom him myself. Ughhhh.....:aimeeyork I will post a pic of him soon. He is adorable and I love him so much. Just want him to get healthy. I has been a long two months since his original illness. |
