Bella is in for her first dental!
 
I dropped off Bella this morning at the vet for her first dental. She is 3 years old. Her teeth were perfectly fine at 2 years of age, but she has a lot of discoloration in her teeth and gingivitis now. I'm amazed at how quickly this developed. They didn't *think* there would need to be any extractions, but they'll keep me posted during the day. She is having bloodwork done before the cleaning. I'll keep you all posted.

Hi. My Bella went through this process a couple of months ago and I know exactly what you mean. The 3rd year was when I noticed a decline in her oral health and had to clean her teeth every single year which scared me to death.
My suggestion to you would be, after this process start brushing her teeth every single day! I have been doing it since two months ago and now her teeth are white still and never bleed.

Oh, and another worthy product is Healthy Mouth - it's VOHC approved, which is nice. I just add it to their food every meal.

Ah yes, tooth brushing. We have the cat finger brush and some chicken-flavored tooth paste, but trying to brush her teeth was such a struggle in the past that we stopped since her teeth were in fine shape previously. Now we may have to rethink that and start a brushing regimen.

I just heard from the vet--they removed FOUR TEETH, including one of her canines :(. One of the teeth they removed was cracked and I don't have an explanation for that, since she never gets any hard chew toys, and I didn't think her kibble was that hard. They said that all of the teeth they removed came out easily. I pick her up at 3 PM this afternoon. I will have to have a detailed talk with them about dental hygiene. I hope her mouth is not too sore, and that she will still be able to eat kibble.

If you don't mind my asking how much do you put in their food. I like that idea - Cali does not like the drink the Healthy Mouth straight out of the bowl.

Glad everything went well. Poor little Bella, hope she's not in much pain tonight.

Thanks! The vet told me that Bella's case was not unusual for Yorkies. They sent me home with pain medicine for her. She has dissovable sutures. She's supposed to have soft food for three days. I added low sodium beef broth to her kibble and she at it up right away, so her appetite is good. They said low activity and no stairs, and of course the first thing she did when she got home was run up the stairs and jump on the bed. She seems back to normal already. I'm to start to try brushing her teeth a week from now.

lol, these pups bounce back so fast it's amazing. Great vet gave pain meds. Happy to know she ate well.

She was doing better yesterday after teeth cleaning than she is today :(. I think that's because they gave her a special injection of pain medicine yesterday, and now all she has to rely on are Deramaxx pills. It's clear that she's sore, and she wasn't very hungry at all this morning. I had to hand feed her kibbles soaked in beef broth this morning and she didn't eat very many before she turned up her nose. Then she went to lie in her other daddy's lap. I took a photo that I'll upload when I get home from work today. Hopefully she'll feel better by then.

Best of luck. My Vet said I don't need dental cleanings yet for my dogs. I am trying to hold off as long as possible because in NY they are expensive. He quoted me $400 for each dog which includes their blood work. I will try and put this off as long as possible.

We were quoted about $460 including blood work, but Bella's ended up being over $500 due to the tooth extractions. Each part of the procedure wasn't very expensive, but they all added up. Blood work was the most expensive, followed by anesthesia.

Poor lil Bella, hope she's feeling more like herself tonight..... It's been a longggg time since a pup of mine needed teeth cleaning. Pa. was always much less then NY was. With these prices I better start saving my nickles and dimes.
