New puppy, what food?
 
Asking for a friend.
She is getting her 8 week old puppy in just a few weeks. The breeder is feeding Bil Jac and I was advised that there is much better food out there. My yorkie was an adult when I adopted her so I have no idea what would be a good puppy food to start her out on. Would someone please give advice on this. And does she need to transition the puppy from one food to another?

Just feed the Bil Jac for at least the first couple weeks, then slowly transition by adding a bit of the new food over time.

I feed frozen raw by Primal or Natures Variety. But kibbles I like are Natures Logic, Natures Variety, Solid Gold's Barking At The Moon or Wee Bits, Wellness Core...

I would keep this baby on what it is on until it gets settled into the new home....at least 3 weeks. Like Ann has said, I would then transition to another food....I do not like giving raw meat to puppies, as I did that once and almost killed a litter when they did not have enough intestinal flora to digest the raw meat and they got VERY ill....never did that again. I think if you want to feed raw food, you would do best to wait until that baby is at least 8 months old, and can appropriately digest a raw diet....

With a baby that is too young to be separated from momma.....I would strongly recommend Royal Canin canned puppy mousse. I would feed that until baby is at LEAST 4 months old, then switch to Royal Canin Puppy kibble, which is still a puppy formula that they must have to develop to their best ability, then at a year old they can go to adult kibble.

Thank you so much for the advice. I am really thankful that I found this forum several years ago. It really has helped me with my yorkie because I knew nothing about them. We have been very fortunate with Coco. We've basically had no problems with her other than allergies which were a nightmare in the beginning. But, adopting a grown yorkie is much different than raising from an 8 week old puppy. I figured Royal Canine would be very good for her as a puppy because I remembered reading that mentioned a while back. But, I wanted to make sure I was giving her a current recommendation for her new bundle of joy.

I can't wait to see this sweet little girl. I'm almost a bit worried because I know as soon as I hold her I am going to want another yorkie. We love Coco so much. She has definitely been a joy in our lives.

I told her what you said and she is wondering why she would want to go from what the puppy is eating now which is Bil Jac and then go to the puppy mousse and then go back to dry food??? I know nothing about Bil Jac but I am wondering if it is a canned/wet food that is being fed to the puppy now???:confuse2::confuse2:

Just wondering if there are any other opinions on what food to feed an 8 week old yorkie? I don't mean to sound like I am second guessing Royal Canin because I am not at all. I just want to see if there are other opinions.

If you were bringing home and 8 week old, what would You feed?

I do not make a habit of dishing dog food...that choice of food is NOT what I would select for my enfant yorkie....you want that baby to get the best you can provide, and Bil Jac is not what I consider the best you can do. ANY puppy specific food is preferable....just plain good nutrition to give that baby the best start on life you can. As far as switching from what she is on now to a puppy mousse, the puppy is too young to be separated from momma in the first place....it is incumbent on the responsible new owner to provide the very best nutrition specifically designed to contribute to the development of the puppy, so that is why you would give the canned baby mousse....when the puppy gets older, you switch to the puppy kibble, which again, is fortified with extra stuff for a puppy....it is softer than plain old kibble, because that baby is JUST developing eating habits....you want to do the very best you can do for this baby, since he has gotten off to such an early start without his momma.....these formulas I have told you about are age specific and contribute the very best to the age of that baby....they need the very best, age specific diets they can get until they are at least 8 months old...I encourage my own new owners to continue until 1 year old, then go to an adult kibble.....I am an advocate of RC....just make sure whatever you feed meets the requirements of your dog.

I wouldnt allow anyone to drop a baby under a minimum of 12 weeks old off on me. That is nothing but sheer laziness on the part of the "breeder", trying to avoid the expense of providing what that puppy should be getting, as well as all the work and effort that goes into producing a well grounded, well adjusted baby......a yorkie that is 8 weeks old is still nursing on momma and the lessons that momma teaches that baby from 8 weeks to 14 weeks old, help that baby develop into the very best, well grounded, well rounded baby possible.

I would highly recommend the book, "Yorkies For Dummies"......I advise all my new owners to read the book cover to cover.....it is a great book that covers everything you will need to know to get you started with your puppy.

Thank you so very much. This is just the information I am looking for. I knew from all my reading on this forum that 8 weeks old was a bit too young to be bringing home a yorkie. I did mention this to her also. I will advise her about this and maybe the breeder will be willing to keep this sweet one for another month. I would hate for something to go terribly wrong with this sweet little girl. Thank you so so much. I will pass this information on exactly as you stated.

This is really a good recommendation especially to those new owners of Yorkies. I suggest to any new pet owner to spend on this kind of book because it's really helpful and beneficial.
