need help on food please!!
 

been researching on what kind of food to feed my yorkie she is about 4lbs and very picky on her current food blue buffalo im trying to make the switch to a different brand for her and my other dog a chihuahua that is better for them i was thinking about Acana since i read it had a lot of good reviews but is it okay for my yorkie of her size to eat this brand on the bag it shows the feeding starts at 11 pounds and just want to be sure its okay before making the switch thank you

I definitely would not feed your 4lb baby girl foods that is labeled 11+ lbs
They are so very tiny and oh so delicate! Do they have a small breed version?

You would be fine to feed Acana. The feeding guidelines are just a general basis. I don't follow them anyway. My friends 4lb and 6lb yorkies have been eating Acana for years.

My little girl is 4 pounds and I feed her Orijen. I just calculated what it would be for 4# and give her that. I think it even said for 4# on the bag but I give her a little less. She loves it!

Just went and got her orijen it says on the bag 4 lbs so I'm glad it says it for her size but she still not really wanting to eat it yet I hope she does try and and like it cuz I don't know what else to do! !

Let us know how it goes! If it doesn't go well, there are lots of other foods to try.

Acana and Orijen are the only two kibbles I would advise my friends to look at

I got diverted and lost time to make additions to my last post....so I will add it here!

Food fight!!!! I would be researching which brands have not had any recalls and start there! I have never put my faith in the dentist that "recommends dog food"....he even admitted he just uses positive reviews that the dog food company itself puts out....a little "conflict of interest", me thinks! Remember, dogs eat road kill if given a chance....and small animals running around in the fields....and poop.....so find a food that has not been tampered with by humans so much that it has been recalled because of additive issues, or bacteria issues, or mold issues, etc....there are many, many brands that have gone along, recall free.....if your dog likes it, if your dog eats it, your baby will be just fine! I was stunned to find out something as simple as Cesars little portions of dog food, have never been recalled...cant argue with THAT!.......and most dogs love it and it is not a budget buster! GREAT for people on tight budgets that cant afford to spend several hundred dollars a month on dog food! (I look at all this high dollar dog food, raw, cooked, freeze dried, etc, etc, etc and then BAM! RECALL!! You spend a fortune, thinking you are doing the best a person can do, and they slam you!). I prefer kibble but some people like to feed a soft food.....just so you are informed, even "lowly" Cesars is perfectly fine!

A recall itself doesn't really bother me so much. It all depends on HOW the recall was handled, what it was recalled for and how often it happens. It makes me feel better when a company steps up to the plate and voluntarily recalls at the start of a problem rather than letting things drag out, dogs get sick, etc, and THEN doing something about it.

Of course I'd prefer no recalls but even human foods suffer from this problem. We're all still human beings and not 100% perfect.

I would be looking at the ingredient list and considering a dogs digestive system and what is best for my dog. Your last statement is so very true Britster. At the end of the day it is your dog and you have to go with your heart. Check out "truth about pet food".

I'm also a supporter of Acana and Orijen. Scottie started out on Acana, but then he started to lose interest in it (maybe wasn't that tasty - the ingredients list protein 'meal' rather than the actual protein) so I switched over to Orijen since it's the same company. I was hesitant at first because of the higher protein and people commenting that higher protein may cause loose stool, but Scottie was fine and still loving it!

Scottie is 5 lbs and eats 1/3 to 1/2 cup a day of Orijen, depending on how active he's been. On all our bags for both Acana and Orijen, the feeding guide starts at 4lbs and then 11lbs.

Oh Monty! Le sigh. Fussy guy. When I got him a couple months ago he came with Orijen. Was happy! Then he lost interest and the Vet suggested Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Puppy kibble. Worked for a while but not so much now. Due to reading this forum I have been mixing it with Cesar's wet and that has worked for a while ... but it is waning. Frown. Am currently researching raw food because he loves the boiled chicken and sweet potato etc etc.

Before switching to raw 4 years ago I had Teegy on Orijen and he liked it more than others I'd fed. I liked that it smelled of meat had real meat and fish ingredients and was locally sourced

I love Acana! I feed it to my two very small dogs no problem.

I pick food based on ingredients first, then look at recalls. I am not concerned that there WAS a recall but how it was dealt with.
