Thick scabs under armpit My yorkie Marley has three thick scabs under her armpit. They are sensitive to touch. I applied coconut oil to them and also fed her some. Previously she had dry skin all over and would have scabs of dry skin. They have went away recently but now I'm seeing that scab under her armpit and I am very concerned. I feed her a grain free diet...the blue wilderness salmon food (I believe it's something like that) and she does not each much table food. She doesn't itch very often but I do sometimes catch her scratching at her face. What could these scabs be? I don't feel like they are an allergy. http://i65.tinypic.com/301nj2c.jpg |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Looks like a possible staph infection and she needs to be seen by a vet. Likely needs a round of oral antibiotics. Keep us posted. |
I put coconut oil on it this morning, and I checked it again tonight. She has chewed part of the scab off and it very red and irritated (obviously). I tried to put more coconut oil on it to try and help heal it, and she was in so much pain I couldn't even touch it without her jerking away. I did a quick search on staph and I don't feel like her scabs compare to the pictures? I'm just trying to figure out if she needs a vet or if the problem will resolve itself. I feel so bad for her. |

Ask your vet about Chlorhexadine 4% shampoo. It is great for skin issues... |
To me, this looks *exactly* like pyoderma, which is a staph intermedius infection. This is seen recurrently in dogs with allergies, Cushings, and/or thyroid issues. It's treated w/ Simplicef x 30 days if diffuse, or perhaps Muciprocin if local only. Does she chew or lick her paws? |
